Georgetown Blanks High Point in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON – The eighth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team shut out the High Point University Panthers 2-0 on Sunday afternoon in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at the Matthews Sportsplex in Matthews, North Carolina. With the win, the Hoyas move to 9-1-2 on the season, while the Panthers conclude their campaign with a mark of 12-2.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "We played really well today against an excellent High Point team. Congrats to them on an awesome season, and with no one really leaving, they are a program on the rise. They forced us to play really well today to get a result and it was good to see so many of our guys stepping into different roles. Both Zach (Riviere) and Chris have been playing well and it was great to see that translate to the game itself. Obviously, Giannis (Nikopolidis) had to make some important saves to keep it 1-0. You need a goalkeeper that can do that if you want to make a run in the tournament, so we were pleased to see it."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown dominated the possession in the first half as senior Paul Rothrock had the first good look at the net.
  • The Blue & Gray got on the board in the 21st minute as sophomore Will Sands crossed a ball to Rothrock on the right side. He passed to freshman Chris Hegardt who went to the back post and found the head of Zach Riviere. The junior headed it into the back of the net making it 1-0.
  • It would be the defense coming up big in the next few minutes, as junior keeper Giannis Nikopolidis came up with a pair of big saves to keep the clean sheet.
  • The Hoyas would continue to push as sophomore Dante Polvara and freshman John Franks both had dangerous chances stopped and GU went into the half leading 1-0.
  • It didn't take long for Georgetown to add another in the second period as the duo of Riviere and Hegardt was at it again. Riviere came down the field unmarked and sent a ball into the box to Hegardt. The freshman made a move battling through the defense and shot it through two Panthers on the line to make it 2-0 in the 49th minute.
  • Following the goal, the Blue & Gray continued to pressure.
  • On the defensive end Nikopolidis and his backline stood up to a number of late Panther chances to maintain the shutout and the 2-0 final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot High Point 13-9 with seven on goal to the Panthers' two.
  • The Hoyas took five corners to HPU's four.
  • Nikopolidis was credited with the shutout managing two saves on the afternoon.
  • The win snapped a nine-match win streak for the Panthers.

  • The Hoyas will now face Penn State in the third round of the tournament on Thursday, May 6 at WakeMed Field in Cary, North Carolina. Kickoff times and streaming information will be announced in the coming days.
