Hoyas Defeat Butler, 78-62

Box Score WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team picked up the 78-62 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena in a BIG EAST Conference matchup. It marked the final contest in a five-game homestand and the fifth in 10 days for the Blue & Gray. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-10 on the season and 2-7 in league play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "It was great to get the win today, the kids have been fighting so hard and I'm proud of them.  No matter what it took, we wanted to complete the task. With some key players out, we had some kids step up. Mary Clougerty played a fantastic game for us, Bri Scott played big and Kaylin West ran the show for us. We had a balanced offense and some defensive stops. I just thought it was a team effort."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas jumped out to a quick lead thanks to two quick buckets from graduate student Mary Clougherty in her first start on the Hilltop.
  • Butler (1-17, 0-9 BIG EAST) would answer back as GU clung to a one-possession lead.
  • In the final minute of action, Clougherty sank a triple on the assist from classmate Kaylin West to make it 14-8.
  • Both teams would score late as GU held the 16-12 advantage at the end of the first period.
  • Leading by five points early in the second quarter, Georgetown allowed a 6-0 run from the Bulldogs as Butler took its first lead of the game.
  • The Blue & Gray would tie it up on three occasions, before a jumper from freshman Kaliyah Myricks put the Hoyas on top 32-31 with 1:29 left in the half.
  • Butler would regain the lead, and even a late triple by graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris was not enough as the Hoyas went into the half trailing 36-35.
  • Georgetown controlled the second half as freshman Brianna Scott opened the scoring, and Clougherty kept it going to build the lead to six,
  • Butler fought back, but at the 4:04 mark in the third quarter, a layup from Clougherty on the pass from Scott sparked a 9-0 run to give GU its largest lead to that point.
  • A jumper from West in the final seconds of the period put the Hoyas on top 57-47.
  • The Bulldogs could not find a way back in the final period as GU continued to build the lead thanks to the play of Clougherty, West and Scott. The trio, along with Bolden-Morris, dominated to go up by as much as 19.
  • The Blue & Gray eventually cruised to the 78-62 victory.
Of Note
  • Clougherty led the way with 24 points, including four 3-pointers. It tied her career high and was her first start on the Hilltop.
  • Scott managed a career-best 15 points to go along with a squad-high nine boards and two steals.
  • Bolden-Morris rounded out those in double figures with 14 points to her credit.
  • West had a good day from the point with a career-best 13 assists as well as four steals.
  • The Hoyas shot 44.4 percent (32-72) from the field and allowed 41.8 percent (23-55) shooting by the Bulldogs. Georgetown outrebounded Butler, 37-35, and the GU defense forced 19 Bulldog turnovers.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas will head back out of the road for a three-game road swing. Georgetown will face Seton Hall on Wednesday evening at Walsh Gymnasium in a 7 p.m. matchup. The game will be broadcast on the BIG EAST Digital Network presented by SoFi on FloSports. Live stats will be available at GUHoyas.com.
All Georgetown women's basketball home games are currently scheduled to be played at McDonough Arena. All Georgetown University indoor on-campus intercollegiate athletics events will be played with no fans in attendance for the month of January due to the emergence and rapid spread of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in the Washington, D.C., region, across the country, and globally.
