WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University men's soccer team blanked the University of Connecticut Huskies 1-0 in GU's final BIG EAST Conference matchup of the regular season on Wednesday evening in Storrs, Connecticut. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-4-3 overall and 8-1-1 in league play, while the Huskies are now 7-7-3 for the season and 3-4-3 in the BIG EAST. Georgetown has already clinched the top seed in the upcoming BIG EAST Championship presented by JEEP as well as outright the BIG EAST Regular Season Championship.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "It's always an accomplishment to go on the road and win in this league and it was great to get another shutout. I think Ryan Schewe played the best game of his season, which has been crucial for us to get these results over the past few games. When your attacking is not quite firing on all cylinders, it's always good to be hard to score on. I'm happy to get the win and now we have a bye to get things right so we can hopefully have a good week of soccer next weekend."
How it Happened
- UConn really controlled the pace of the game throughout the first half as GU had few chances on target.
- In the 11th minute, a UConn shot sailed just over the crossbar as the Huskies looked to find the back of the net.
- With the Huskies winning the battle of possession, it was the Hoya defense and junior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe that had to come up with stops to keep it scoreless at the break.
- Georgetown searched for the go-ahead goal in the second half and it would come in the 62nd minute of action.
- A long ball came to junior Kyle Linhares on the right side. He battled the defense and slid it across the goal to find a charging Jack Panayotou surrounded by Husky defenders. The freshman would get a foot on it, and keeper Michael Stone would mishandle the shot as it got past him to make it 1-0.
- Minutes later, it looked as though UConn would even the score, but Schewe got a fingertip on the shot to redirect it out for the corner.
- Schewe would play the hero one last time as a Husky corner was headed towards the goal in the closing minutes of action, but the junior made a diving save to keep the clean sheet making the final 1-0.
Of Note
- Georgetown was outshot by UConn, 16-5, and GU managed just two shots on goal to UConn's four.
- The Blue & Gray was awarded three corner kicks to the Huskies' seven in the game.
- Schewe took the shutout in the net with four saves for the match.
