Hoyas Defeat Butler 69-48 in BIG EAST Finale

INDIANAPOLIS – The Georgetown University women's basketball team got the 69-48 victory over the Butler University Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Conference finale at historic Hinkle Fieldhouse. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 9-18 on the season and finish league play with a mark of 4-15 heading into the conference tournament.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "It was a well-balanced win today, the team came out and shared the ball. It was good to see three kids in double figures, but I thought our defensive pressure is really what caused them problems. We're very proud to be able to finish the season on a two-game winning streak going into the tournament."
How it Happened
  • After a slow start, the Hoyas began to look inside finding opportunities in the paint and on the break to stage a 10-0 run and lead 12-3. The Hoyas were tenacious in the press forcing a number of Butler (1-26, 0-18 BIG EAST) turnovers.
  • A triple in the final minute from graduate student Milan Bolden-Morris would put the Blue & Gray on top 17-7 at the end of the first quarter.
  • Georgetown scored early in the second, but the Bulldogs knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to pull within nine 24-15 and force a Hoya timeout.
  • Sophomore Kelsey Ransom would hit one from downtown out of the timeout as the Hoyas were able to match the Bulldogs to keep some distance.
  • Despite some late Butler points, Ransom drove the lane and hit one before the buzzer to make it 34-24 at the break.
  • Bolden-Morris opened the second half with a triple which sparked a 10-0 run.
  • Butler answered with a 6-0 run to force a GU timeout, and the Hoyas came out of it with their own 6-0 run started by a bucket from Ransom.
  • The Hoyas would continue to find holes in the Bulldog defense leading 56-34 at the end of three quarters.
  • The Blue & Gray cruised through the fourth quarter and young players had an opportunity to get some experience as Georgetown managed the 69-48 victory.
 Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 15 points, five assists and three steals.
  • Bolden-Morris added 11, and freshman Brianna Scott rounded out those in double figures with 10 points to her credit.
  • Junior Graceann Bennett was big down low with seven rebounds to go along with eight points.
  • The Hoyas shot 45.3% (29-64) from the field and allowed 41.3% (19-46) shooting by the Bulldogs.
  • Georgetown was outrebounded by Butler 37-29, and the GU defense forced 24 Bulldog turnovers.
  • The win was GU's second of the weekend after defeating Xavier on Friday evening.
Schedule Notes
  • The Hoyas have completed the regular season but must wait for outcomes on Tuesday to solidify BIG EAST Tournament seeding. Georgetown will be either the ninth or tenth seed in the tournament beginning on Friday, March 4 at Mohegan Sun in Uncasville, Conn.
