Men’s Soccer Wins BIG EAST Regular Season Championship

WASHINGTON – The No. 7/13 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a 2-1 victory over the Marquette University Golden Eagles to secure the 2023 BIG EAST Regular Season Championship on Saturday afternoon in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Valley Fields. With the win, the Hoyas finish the regular season with a mark of 11-2-2 on the year and 6-1-1 in BIG EAST action, while the Golden Eagles conclude the 2023 campaign at 7-6-3 and 1-5-2 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "It's a great accomplishment for this group of seniors to have won every regular season championship in their careers with five in a row. This was certainly a difficult game to do it on the road against a talented Marquette team that gave us a lot of trouble. Ryan Schewe was outstanding in goal today, he arguably won us the league with some of the plays he made for us in a critical time when the score was 0-0."
How it Happened
  • Marquette was the aggressor early on as the Golden Eagles forced Georgetown senior goalkeeper Ryan Schewe and the Hoya defense to come up with a trio of big saves in the first 30 minutes of action.
  • As the game settled in, the chances began to come open for the Blue & Gray until the Hoyas broke through in the 32nd minute.
  • Sophomore Zach Zengue served in a corner on the right side and found the head of junior defender Maximus Jennings who knocked it into the back of the net to make it 1-0.
  • Georgetown searched for a second, but the Hoyas and Golden Eagles would go into the break with GU on top 1-0.
  • The Blue & Gray had a golden opportunity in the first few minutes of the second half, but then Marquette took over forcing the GU defense on its heels.
  • Schewe and the backline stood strong and the tide turned to the Hoyas who continued to push for the second score.
  • It would come in the 73rd minute as sophomore Max Viera took it to the endline and sent it across the goal for classmate Jacob Murrell who shot to the left post to put the Blue & Gray on top 2-0.
  • Just three minutes later, MU made a substitution and he immediately made an impact as Dominik Danis scored on a lofted ball into the middle of the box making the score 2-1.
  • The equalizer never came for Marquette, and the Hoya defense held on for the 2-1 victory and the outright championship.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Marquette, 15-14, and the Hoyas had eight shots on goal while the Golden Eagles managed five.
  • GU was awarded seven corner kicks while Marquette had six in the game.
  • Schewe took the win in the net with four saves in the contest.
  • The regular season championship marks a record four straight for the Hoyas who have won it in 2019, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Due to the pandemic, the league did not crown a champion in 2020 but the Blue & Gray did have the best record and was the top seed in the tournament making 2023 the fifth-consecutive season as the No. 1 seed.
