Hoyas Fall to Dukes in NCAA Second Round

WASHINGTON – The fourth-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the James Madison University Dukes in a 1-0 decision in the second round of the NCAA Championship at Shaw Field Washington, D.C. on Sunday afternoon. With the loss, the Hoyas finish the season with a mark of 13-3-3 on the year, while the Dukes improve to 10-4-5 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese

"First off, congratulations to JMU. They played a really good game and took their moment well. It was very much an NCAA Tournament game with a wonderful atmosphere, and we created a few really good moments that we didn't take. It's just really heartbreaking for our eight seniors who have been incredible for our program. Their first year was the COVID year, and they've been through a huge amount of adversity but this is an exemplary group of guys who have built the culture of our team."

How it Happened

  • The Dukes had some early chances while Georgetown looked to find possession.
  • Georgetown began to find opportunities to slip in behind the Duke defense midway through the period.
  • The contest changed in the 39th minute when a trip in the box by the Blue & Gray resulted in a penalty kick for the Dukes.
  • Davide Materazzi calmly stepped up and fired to make it 1-0 in favor of JMU which would stand at the half.
  • The second half started with a perfect opportunity for the Dukes as GU keeper Ryan Schewe came off his line. The shot was saved by Hoya defender Maximus Jennings to keep it a one-goal match.
  • The Blue & Gray began to possess in the second half as GU had two dangerous free kicks that the team could not convert.
  • As the Duke defense stood strong, the Hoyas tried to serve in balls but there were never true opportunities.
  • In the end, the equalizer would never come and Georgetown fell 1-0.
