Second-Half Surge Leads Hoyas Past Titans

FULLERTON, Calif. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team used a big second-half run to defeat the Cal State Fullerton Titans 65-55 on Sunday afternoon in Fullerton, California in the second game of GU's West Coast swing. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 5-1 on the season and the Titans drop to 2-3 for the year.

Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "We were much more focused in the second half, we were focused on our principles and I thought we did a better job of that. Sometimes we get into a situation where we're rolling, and we get comfortable and I don't think we can ever get comfortable. So for us, we need to keep that same intensity, that same focus and that same will, doing things the Georgetown way for 40 minutes."
How it Happened
  • Graduate student Graceann Bennett opened the scoring with a bucket and the Hoyas battled to gain a small lead going hard in the post.
  • The Titans managed some late layups to cut it to two late in the first quarter as GU held the slight 17-15 advantage at the end of the period.
  • The second quarter was quiet for both squads, but Georgetown clung to a four-point lead until a late run in the waning minutes of the period allowed the Titans to cut it to one, 24-23, at the break.
  • The Titans took a quick lead to open the second half, but a layup from Bennett put the game back in the hands of the Hoyas.
  • From that point on, the squads traded buckets with neither able to put together a run.
  • Late in the period, CSF got some momentum and held the 43-41 lead at the end of the third quarter.
  • The run came in the fourth as a slash from senior Kelsey Ransom allowed GU to rattle off 10 quick points resulting in Georgetown taking the 56-45 lead.
  • Fullerton would not find an answer in the final minutes as the Hoya momentum continued and the Hoyas held on for the 65-55 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with a season-high 20 points as well as two rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • Graduate student Alex Cowan had 15 points including an 8-9 performance at the line, and Bennett rounded out those in double figures with 10 points as well as eight boards.
  • Junior Kaliyah Myricks was active on the glass as well with eight rebounds to go along with two points in the game.
  • The Hoyas shot 37.7% (23-61) from the field, but the Blue & Gray allowed 46.9% (23-49) shooting by the Titans.
  • GU outrebounded CSF 36-29 in the game, and Georgetown forced 21 Titan turnovers on 11 steals.
  • Hope Hassmann led Cal State Fullerton with 11 points as one of two Titans in double figures.
