KENNESAW, Ga. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team needed a heads-up play from senior
Kelsey Ransom, but managed to get the 57-55 victory over the Kennesaw State University Owls Thursday evening at the KSU Convocation Center in the team's final nonconference game of the season. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 10-2 on the season, while the Owls drop to 4-8 for the year.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "Kudos to Kennesaw, I think Coach Blue does a great job. We have to make sure that we're taking care of the things we can control, that's rebounding and defense. I wasn't pleased with some aspects of our game tonight, but tough teams find a way to win and our young women were tough enough to do that. We had some key performances from Ariel Jenkins and Mya Bembry who stepped up and gave us some firepower, and congratulations to Alex Cowan on scoring her 1,000th point. We're going to continue to get better, continue to grow and get ready for conference."
How it Happened
- The Owls held a small lead for much of the first quarter as the shorthanded Hoyas battled to stay within a possession.
- With four minutes remaining, a pair of free throws from graduate student Alex Cowan sparked a run including four points from junior Yasmin Ott.
- On the defensive end, Georgetown did not allow a field goal for the final five minutes and only gave up free throws to lead 17-13 at the end of the period.
- The Hoyas clung to a small lead early in the second quarter, but KSU would move ahead midway through to force a GU timeout.
- Out of the timeout, Cowan knocked down a triple and even a jumper by the Owls couldn't slow the Hoyas as the grad student hit another on the next possession.
- In the final minute, sophomore Victoria Rivera nailed one from downtown and GU went into the break leading 34-28.
- Fouls and free throws were the story of the third period for both teams.
- KSU chipped away at the lead and managed to cut it to one 47-46 going into the final stanza.
- Georgetown struggled to score in the fourth quarter, and the Owls managed to gain the lead with some early buckets.
- The Hoyas led by three with under two minutes remaining, but KSU came back to knot the game at 55 with 13 seconds to go.
- Missed free throws from both teams provided opportunities to move ahead, but it all came down to a heads up play from Ransom who bounced the ball off of the back of her defender on the inbounds and was fouled on her shot.
- The senior sank both free throws this time around to secure the 57-55 victory.

- Junior Ariel Jenkins led the way for the Hoyas with 11 points to go along with four rebounds.
