Hoyas Down Friars 73-69 in Regular Season Home Finale

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Providence College Friars 73-69 Tuesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at McDonough Arena in GU's home regular season finale. With the win, the Blue & Gray improved to 13-15 overall and 6-13 in BIG EAST play.

Head Coach James Howard
  • "Managing the end of the game is easier when you're leading, but when adversity hits how do you remain calm? One of the things I continue to tell them when we're leading is that we need to continue to defend. You can't let up, we knew they had the ability to score quickly and they could make it a six or seven point game. In those moments, you've got to be tougher. You can't watch the clock, you have to play until the final whistle."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas came out fired up and traded buckets until five quick points from junior Jada Claude sparked a 13-0 run as the Blue & Gray was rolling.
  • Providence (13-16, 4-14 BIG EAST) would start to respond late, but Georgetown always found an answer and led 22-15 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Friars owned the second quarter, starting it off with back-to-back triples and a free throw to tie it at 22.
  • Claude would once again spark a run with a jumper as GU went on the 11-3 streak to regain the lead 33-25.
  • Providence answered with another 3-pointer, but a layup from graduate student Kristina Moore started a 10-1 run to end the half as GU went into the break leading 43-29.
  • It was PC that opened the scoring in the third, however, Moore sank a triple and Georgetown surged ahead leading by as much as 19 at one point, 51-32.
  • The Hoyas would continue to work, never letting Providence back in. Even a trey at the end of the period would not make a difference as GU was up 56-41.
  • Late in the fourth quarter, Providence battled back to make it a 10-point game with 1:50 to go after a 13-3 run.
  • Georgetown would try to regroup and hold on as the Friars surged to cut it to two with 11 seconds on the clock.
  • A pair of free throws from junior captain Kelsey Ransom in the final seconds sealed the 73-69 victory.
Of Note
  • Ransom led the way with 21 points and five assists, while Claude added 16 points and three blocks.
  • Moore tallied 14 points and a squad-best six rebounds in the game, and senior Graceann Bennett would score 12.
  • Freshman Kennedy Fauntleroy had six points, but led GU with six rebounds and an impressive nine assists as well as three steals.
  • The Hoyas shot 56.6% (30-53) from the field, and the Blue & Gray allowed 43.6% (24-55) shooting by the Friars.
  • GU was outrebounded by Providence 28-27 in the game, and Georgetown forced 10 Friar turnovers on seven steals.
  • Niriah Scott led PC with 20 points as one of three players in double figures.
