PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Georgetown University women's basketball team willed itself to the 73-71 victory over the Providence College Friars on Wednesday evening in a BIG EAST Conference matchup at Alumni Hall in Providence, Rhode Island. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 13-4 on the season and an even 3-3 in league play, while the Friars drop to 8-11 for the year and 2-4 in the conference.
Interim Head Coach Darnell Haney
- "This was a great effort by everyone tonight, so many people came in and contributed. Shoutout to Modest McConnell, she has been patiently waiting her turn and tonight was her night, she got the game ball. Tremendous efforts by Kelsey Ransom and Victoria Rivera. Kelsey chose her spots wisely and took care of the ball. Victoria, Graceann Bennett, Alex Cowan, they all came in and gave us something. We are the team that has to win as a team. We don't have just one good player, we need everyone to show up. We just need to continue to grow, get better, play Georgetown defense and we'll be fine."
How it Happened
- Georgetown took a small lead two minutes into the game as a pair of layups from sophomore Victoria Rivera had the Hoyas rolling.
- A jumper at the elbow from senior Kelsey Ransom made it 13-12 at the 5:20 mark, but the Friars answered with an 8-0 run spanning almost the remainder of the period.
- A bucket from graduate student Graceann Bennett with two seconds to go made the score 20-15 in favor of Providence after 10 minutes of action.
- Bennett would take over in the second scoring GU's first six points. Despite the effort, the Hoya defense could not stop the Friars as PC stayed on top.
- A layup from Bennett would spark a 13-0 run late in the half for the Blue & Gray which included a pair of 3-pointers from Rivera and one from Ransom as the Hoyas would lead 38-35 at the break.
- Bennett opened the second half with a layup, but a 12-6 PC run would allow the Friars to hold the lead.
- Four quick points by Ransom in the final minute of the third gave the Blue & Gray the advantage as GU was on top 50-49 with one quarter remaining.
- Sophomore Modesti McConnell was the story of the fourth as she came off the bench and knocked down three 3-pointers to give the Hoyas the 59-57 lead at the 6:31 mark.
- With 2:17 to go, Providence took the lead. However, Ransom would not let Providence get the win.
- The senior willed Georgetown to victory scoring six of GU's final nine points including a layup with four seconds to go with the score knotted at 71.
- Ransom would drive the lane and get the bucket high off of the glass to give GU the 73-71 victory.
