WASHINGTON - The No. 18/24 Georgetown University men's soccer team fell to the St. John's University Red Storm 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the BIG EAST Conference finale at Belson Stadium in Queens, New York. With the loss, the Hoyas drop to 8-4-5 overall and 5-2-1 in BIG EAST play, while the Red Storm improve to 7-5-5 on the year and 5-1-2 in the league.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Credit to St. John's, they defended really well. We entered the game in the best attacking form of the season, and they limited us to a miniscule number of opportunities. But at the end of the day, one of our team goals was to come out of conference play as one of the top four seeds to get that home quarterfinal, and that's exactly what we did. Saturday begins the next chapter and we are excited about the task of trying to win the BIG EAST title in a super competitive tournament."
How it Happened
- It was a quiet first half for both squads as neither registered a shot or a corner kick. The teams went into the break in a scoreless tie.
- Georgetown had the first shot of the contest early in the second half, however, the first goal of the match was by the Red Storm in the 55th minute.
- A foul in the box was reviewed and deemed a penalty kick which Nigel Griffith connected on to make it 1-0.
- Two minutes later, it was Griffith again as SJU scored on a counter to double the deficit for the Blue & Gray.
- The Hoyas would never find the answer as GU fell 2-0.
