WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team fell 2-0 in the second round of the NCAA Championship to the NC State Wolfpack on Sunday afternoon at Shaw Field. With the loss, the Hoyas finish the season with a mark of 11-5-5 overall, while the Wolfpack moves on to the Round of 16 with a record of 10-4-5 on the season.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "This is a tough way to end the season, but you have to give a lot of credit to NC State. They have some really dangerous attacking guys, and scored two fantastic goals. The second goal was as good as you'll see from a finishing point of view. I thought this was a really tight, good college soccer game. We hit a couple posts, and one of those goes in early, then maybe things are a little different. Looking at this team, it is one of the most fun teams I've coached in my 29 years. The seniors did such an amazing job setting a standard, having fun, working hard and finding ways to run a season. We won the BIG EAST with this group, and got a tournament seed so that makes it all the more difficult when it ends, but I couldn't be prouder of this team. They made the journey so much fun."
How it Happened
- The Wolfpack had the first shot on goal, but it was Georgetown that was dangerous, applying early pressure and seeing freshman Mitchell Baker's header deflect off of the post just five minutes into the contest.
- Georgetown controlled the pace until 20 minutes remaining in the first half, when NC State began to get momentum.
- The Wolfpack had two good looks which were stopped by keeper Tenzing Manske, but the squad broke through to find the back of the net in the 27th minute to make it 1-0.
- Minutes later, the Hoyas had a corner that went off of the crossbar as they pushed for the equalizer. It would not come as GU went into the break trailing 1-0.
- The Hoyas were on the front foot for much of the second half, but struggled to find quality chances.
- With keeper Logan Erb out of the net, Baker had an open look but the shot was blocked by a defender.
- Moments later, a GU giveaway allowed a Wolfpack counter resulting in a laser from Donavan Phillip who connected to make it 2-0.
- Georgetown pushed, but could not find a goal, eventually falling 2-0 to close out the season.
Of Note
- Georgetown managed 12 shots in the contest, while NC State tallied 15.
- GU had three shots on goal, while the Wolfpack managed five.
- The Hoyas were awarded two corners, while NC State also registered two in the game.
- Manske took the loss in the net with three saves, while Erb had three saves as well for the Wolfpack.
