Sixth-Seeded Hoyas Face Musketeers in BIG EAST Tournament

WASHINGTON – Georgetown University women's basketball is preparing for the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP this weekend.  Sixth-seeded Georgetown will face 11th-seeded Xavier on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. in the opening round of the tournament held at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

About the Hoyas
  • Georgetown is sitting at 19-10 overall and 9-9 in BIG EAST Conference play earning the sixth overall seed in the tournament.
  • GU is coming off a 66-46 win over Xavier on Saturday to close out the regular season.
  • Sophomore Victoria Rivera led the way for the Hoyas with a career-high 18 points including a 6-of-13 performance from beyond the arc. For her effort in the win, she was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday marking a first in her career.
  • Senior Jada Claude added 15 points and seven rebounds, while graduate student Graceann Bennett managed 12 points as well as five rebounds and four steals.
  • Senior Kelsey Ransom rounded out those in double figures, scoring 10 points and posting six assists and four steals in the contest.
  • The 19-10 record marks the most wins in the regular season since 2011 and GU's 9-9 mark is the best since 2019.
  • Ransom is 14th in the league in scoring (13.9 ppg), fifth in assists (4.2 apg) and sits at fifth in swipes with 2.2 steals per game. The senior leads the team in almost all categories.
  • Bennett is second on the team with 9.5 ppg as well as a team-best 7.2 rpg which ranks ninth in the BIG EAST.
  • Brianna Scott rounds out the top three with 8.8 ppg, 6.0 rpg (14th in the BIG EAST) and 1.4 blocks per game, the block total puts her fourth in the conference.
  • The Hoyas are leading the league and ranked 13th in the nation in scoring defense averaging 54.9 ppg.
About the Musketeers
  • Xavier stands at 1-26 overall on the season and 0-18 in BIG EAST Conference play for the 11th seed in the tourney.
  • In the loss to the Hoyas on Saturday, Nila Blackford led Xavier with 16 points, while Aizhanique Mayo added 10.
  • Xavier recorded 33.3% shooting from the field (17-for-51) and pulled down 30 rebounds, but committed 22 turnovers on 12 GU steals.
  • Mackayla Scarlett leads the Musketeers this season, averaging 13.4 ppg. Mayo is also in double-figures, averaging 10.8 ppg.
Series Info
  • This will be the 24th meeting between the two teams dating back to 1995-96. The Hoyas are 1-1 in the series in neutral site games.
  • Earlier this season, Georgetown downed Xavier 77-49 in McDonough Arena and then 66-46 in Cincinnati in the regular season finale on Saturday.
  • Victoria Rivera led the way for the Hoyas with 18 points on a BIG EAST-best six 3-pointers as four players scored in double figures. She was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll for her efforts.
  • The last meeting in the BIG EAST Tournament was a 70-67 loss in Rosemont, Illinois in the first round of the 2015 tourney.  The season prior, the Hoyas won the tourney first-round meeting by a score of 56-37.

  • Georgetown is 18-37 all-time in the BIG EAST Tournament and 12-12 in first round games.
  • The furthest GU has ever gone is the semifinals, making the trip six times most recently in 2019.
