Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Georgetown Ties Cornell, 2-2

WASHINGTON - The No. 14 Georgetown University men's soccer team played to a draw against the Cornell University Big Red 2-2 in a nonconference matchup at Shaw Field on Friday afternoon. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 2-1-2 on the season, while the Big Red improves to 1-0-1 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "Cornell is a good team and they are able to come to other team's grounds and do well. They're an NCAA Tournament type of team so we knew we were facing a well-organized and well-coached group. They dictated a lot of the game which is a disappointment from our side. It was good to see (Zach) Zengue get on the scoresheet with two really good goals, but the two goals we conceded were very preventable. The details matter and that was the lesson from today. If you don't handle everything for 90 minutes, results can escape you."
How it Happened
  • Cornell had the opening look, but it was Georgetown that got on the board first as the combo passing of Eric Howard and Mitchell Baker found Zach Zengue on the right side. He fired to the top right corner, past keeper Ryan Friedberg for his first goal of the season.
  • That would be the best chance for both squads as the teams went into the break with the Blue & Gray leading 1-0.
  • Cornell would not back down and scored a goal from the left side off of a corner less than two minutes into the second half.
  • The Big Red continued to look confident forcing Ulrich and the Hoya defense to come up with some big stops.
  • Georgetown would take the lead in the 78th minute on another Zengue score. Sophomore Matthew Van Horn's header was sent out by the defense and it landed at the feet of Zengue who fired from the middle of the box to put the Blue & Gray on top 2-1.
  • The excitement was short lived, however, as Cornell caught the Hoyas out of shape and managed to score a goal on the other end to knot it at two in the 81st minute of action.
  • Neither team would find the go-ahead score as the contest ended in a 2-2 draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Cornell 13-6, and had just two shots on goal to the Big Red's six.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners to Cornell's two.
  • Senior Luca Ulrich took the draw in the net with four saves in the game, while Friedberg had none.
