WASHINGTON – Georgetown University's field hockey team defeated visiting Quinnipiac 3-1 in BIG EAST action on Friday afternoon at Kehoe Field. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 4-11 overall and 1-5 in league play while the Bobcats fall to 9-7 and 2-4 in conference action.
Riley Fitzgerald led the Hoyas with a hat trick while
Katherine Malloy and
Elena Perez Alejandro were both credited with assists on the day. Fitzgerald's hat trick is the first for a Hoya since Vivienne Trumpbour in 2023 and just the second for Georgetown since 2010.
After a scoreless opening frame, Quinnipiac got on the board first after being awarded a penalty stroke 2:06 into the second quarter. Georgetown would face down another six shots on goal in the stanza with
Ella Fahey stopping each of them.
The GU offense exploded in the third as Fitzgerald scored her first two goals within 38 seconds of each other. On her first goal, she redirected a save off a Yodh shot from a penalty corner to knot things up at 1-1. The ensuing possession saw Malloy dribble into the circle to find Fitzgerald far post to take the 2-1 advantage.
Quinnipiac had a chance to even things up with a second penalty stroke in waning minutes of the third quarter but the Bobcats were stoned by Fahey on the attempt. Fahey finished the day with eight saves for the Blue & Gray.
In the fourth, Quinnipiac pulled its goalie with just under five minutes to play in regulation. With the Hoyas awarded a penalty corner with less than a minute to play, Fitzgerald tipped a shot from Perez Alejandro into the empty net to seal the victory for GU with 39 seconds remaining.
Francisca Eschoyez had the lone goal for Quinnipiac. Cristina Torres had four saves in the loss for the Bobcats.
