BOYDS, Md. - Two goals from junior Mateo Ponce-Ocampo were what the top-seeded Georgetown University men's soccer team needed to defeat the third-seeded University of Connecticut Huskies 3-1 on Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Conference Championship at the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Maryland. It marked the seventh BIG EAST Championship in program history for the Blue & Gray as well as back-to-back championships. With the win, the Hoyas earn the league's automatic NCAA Tournament berth and improve to 12-3-4 overall, while the Huskies drop to 11-4-4 on the year.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "I'm just so proud of this group. It was such a windy day, and that was a thing you had to manage, but they almost never talked about it. They just got onto it, this was something you have to deal with. And I thought they had a wonderful mentality. Maybe the best moment was after they scored to make it 2-1 and we had lost our cushion. Loukas came up with a fantastic goal to give us the 3-1 lead again. Responses like this have been something that I think we've been waiting for all year in terms of not conceding the second but making sure momentum doesn't shift back the other direction. So I was really, really proud of the guys. It's wonderful to win the league and such an accomplishment. It's really a testament to their hard work and mindset."
How it Happened
- Georgetown had the first solid look of the match as a shot from Ponce Ocampo clanged off of the post just five minutes in.
- Five minutes later, he struck again as a shot of a free kick went inches wide.
- Both teams had opportunities but they would go into the break in a scoreless tie.
- UConn had a golden opportunity midway through the second as a shot from the top of the box was saved by senior keeper Tenzing Manske.
- Everything changed in the 66th minute on a corner when senior Zach Zengue served it in and it skimmed off the head of sophomore Mitchell Baker before finding Ponce Ocampo at the back post who fired it in the make it 1-0.
- The junior wasn't done yet as he danced past the defense just one minute later and fired again to put the Blue & Gray on top 2-0.
- The Huskies would not go away quietly, however, as UConn got on the board in the 72nd minute.
- The goals came fast and furious as the Blue & Gray added another to regain the two-goal advantage as freshman Loukas Maroutsis intercepted a pass and buried it to make it 3-1.
- Despite some unsettling moments down the stretch, the Hoya defense stood strong as GU held on for the 3-1 victory and the title.
