Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Downs Delaware State, 60-46

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Delaware State University Hornets 60-46 in its nonconference finale on Saturday afternoon at McDonough in the first game of a Georgetown basketball doubleheader. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 7-3 overall, while the Hornets drop to 3-9 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney

"I'm glad we were able to get the win, but we've got to clean up some of the details. Finals started on Thursday, and one of the things I told my team is that we can't overlook anybody. Brianna Scott was able to play 30 minutes which was big for us with our other five out. So I'm glad we got the W, but we have to make sure we clean up some of the details on both ends of the floor."

How it Happened
  • Georgetown took a quick seven-point lead to begin the contest, but Delaware State answered right back with six points to pull within one.
  • A triple from junior Brianna Byars made it 17-10 in favor of the Blue & Gray before the Hornets closed out the quarter on a 6-2 run as the Hoyas led 19-16 after one.
  • Midway through the second quarter, DSU knotted the contest at 22 before a triple by senior Victoria Rivera sparked a 9-0 Georgetown run that included four points by graduate student Brianna Scott.
  • Late in the first half, sophomore Summer Davis took care of things herself with six-consecutive points and the Hoyas led 37-26 at the break.
  • The teams went back and forth throughout the third quarter as the Blue & Gray maintained its double-digit advantage.
  • Georgetown managed to close out the third quarter with eight-straight points including four from junior Khia Miller as the Hoyas led 52-32 at the end of the stanza.
  • The Hornets did not give up in the fourth, and the Hoyas went cold.
  • Despite some momentum from Delaware State, the Hornets never really threatened and Georgetown came away with the 60-46 victory.
Of Note
  • Miller led the way with 15 points, going 7-7 from the charity stripe.
  • Graduate student Brianna Scott managed her third career double-double posting 12 points to go along with 10 rebounds.
  • Byars scored seven points, pulled down five boards and led the Hoyas with five assists in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 38.9% (21-54) from the field, and allowed just 34.6% (18-52) shooting by Delaware State.
  • GU outrebounded DSU 38-29, and Georgetown forced 19 Hornet turnovers on 11 steals.
  • Jermesha Frierson led Delaware State with 18 points as one of two players in double figures.
