Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Hoyas Play No. 14 Duke to Draw

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University men's soccer team played the No. 14 Duke University Blue Devils to a 2-2 tie on Friday evening under the lights at Shaw Field. With the draw, the Hoyas move to 1-2-2 on the season, while Duke sits at 2-0-2 for the year.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "These games are on the schedule for a reason, and we played so well but had a 30-second lapse where they got two goals which was super frustrating. This group is asking themselves what they need to do to get some results that they feel they deserve, but the fact is that we're playing a really tough schedule. Every game we're learning. We're learning how to play for 90 minutes, resilience, how to capitalize on opportunities. It's better to learn these lessons and pull together as a group in the first five games of the season than the last five games. We know we played well, and I can't get too upset with them. We just need to roll up our sleeves and start preparing for JMU. That's all we can do. It was an unbelievably fun night, the energy was great and our students were fantastic. It was a fun night of soccer, and we're disappointed we didn't get three points, but it was a great game and will make us better for the next one."
How it Happened
  • Both teams had brilliant chances in the first 15 minutes of action, but the keepers made diving saves to keep it scoreless.
  • The contest began to tilt Georgetown's way as the first half wore on and the Blue & Gray controlled the pace.
  • GU would have a pair of golden opportunities both sail wide as the Hoyas put the pressure on.
  • The squads would go into the break in a scoreless tie.
  • Duke began to find space among the Hoya defense and forced GU keeper Tenzing Manske to come up with some stops as Georgetown was on its heels midway through the second half.
  • The game changed in the 67th minute when a ball was served in by senior Julian Barrios Cristales. He passed it to junior Matthew Van Horn whose shot was blocked. The ball fell to senior Zach Zengue who fired low to the far post to make it 1-0.
  • The Hoyas added another in the 78th minute off of a free kick. Zengue served in the ball to the middle of the box, and sophomore Mitchell Baker hit the ball in off of the bounce to send the crowd into a frenzy.
  • Despite the momentum, Duke would answer back as goals just 13 seconds apart would tie the match at two.
  • Neither side would find the equalizer as the game ended in a 2-2 draw.
Of Note
  • Georgetown was outshot by Duke 11-10, and the Hoyas had three on goal to Duke's seven.
  • The Hoyas were awarded five corners to the Blue Devils' three in the contest.
  • Manske had five saves in the game, while Duke keeper Eryk Dymora came up with one.
