WASHINGTON – The No. 3/5 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a trio of second-half goals to defeat the St. John's University Red Storm, 3-0, on Saturday evening at the Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium in Queens, N.Y. With the BIG EAST Conference win, the Hoyas improve to 10-1-1 overall and 4-0-0 in the league, while the Red Storm drop to 5-5-1 for the season and 1-1-1 in conference play.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- "Belson Stadium and St. John's are historically one of the hardest fixtures, in my opinion, in the country, and I thought the guys understood what the changes needed to be and how we would like to play in order to be successful. They executed it really well, and we had really good performances from a lot of parts of the field. We felt good at halftime in terms of how we were playing, but it was still 0-0 and I think that can tighten guys up when you're trying to get three points. I thought they did a great job starting the second half to get the lead, and keep that mentality."
How it Happened
- Both teams had chances in the first half, but neither was able to find the back of the net.
- Georgetown had the better of the opportunities with SJU keeper Nico Bezama coming up with one save as well as the backline looking strong as the Hoyas pushed for a goal.
- The Hoyas got on the board in the 56th minute off a corner from junior David Urrutia as he found the head of classmate Mitchell Baker for his eighth of the season.
- Just six minutes later, GU added another when a short corner was eventually served into the box. The ball hit the feet of both Baker and senior Matthew Van Horn before junior defender Tate Lampman managed to redirect it in as Georgetown took the 2-0 lead.
- St. John's wouldn't go away, and the Johnnies had a dangerous free kick stopped as well as the rebound sailing just over the crossbar. GU keeper Charlie DeMarco continued to come up big, to keep it scoreless as he made some key stops in the second half.
- In the 85th minute, a goal from freshman Terrance Reynolds gave the Hoyas the 3-0 advantage after he battled through the Red Storm defense to find the back of the net.
- Van Horn was credited with the assist as the Hoyas completed the 3-0 victory.
Of Note
- Georgetown outshot St. John's 15-7 and had six shots on goal to the Red Storm's three.
- The Hoyas managed six corners in the game, while St. John's tallied two.
- DeMarco took the win and the shutout with three saves to his credit.
- In his first game back after winning the FIFA ASEAN Cup Championship with the Indonesian National Team, Baker managed a goal and an assist.
- Van Horn had a solid evening with a pair of assists bringing his total to a team-high nine for the year.
