Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

No. 3/3 Hoyas Defeat No. 7/5 Pitt, 6-1

WASHINGTON – The No. 3/3 Georgetown University men's soccer team had a huge second half and picked up the 6-1 victory over the No. 7/5 Pitt Panthers in the nonconference finale on Monday evening at the Ambrose Urbanic Field in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 12-1-1 overall, while the Panthers drop to 8-4-2 for the season.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "In a game like this, you can forget how hard it was. That first 45 minutes was a lot of defending, a lot of trying to figure out what they're doing. They were really good with the ball, but the trend for our group at the moment, which held true again tonight, was our efficiency. We're scoring goals like nothing I've ever seen in the team and it's difficult to defend us when we don't need a lot of chances to get the goal. We had a hard first half, and were happy going into half up 2-1. To get this result against a top-ten team on the road is a great performance by the boys. They showed a lot of mental toughness and resiliency, and hopefully we can maintain that on Saturday."
How it Happened
  • The Hoyas got on the board in the 20th minute as pressure from junior Mitchell Baker resulted in a dangerous pass from the keeper to the center back. Senior Mateo Ponce Ocampo intercepted the pass and fired it right back to make it 1-0.
  • Just nine minutes later, Pitt answered back on a corner kick when a ball bounced in the box and was swept in by Albert Thorsen to knot the contest at one.
  • The Blue & Gray added one more just before half when junior Tate Lampman made a long run down the center of the pitch and took the ball to the endline before crossing it to the near post and finding the foot of classmate Jack Brown who shot it past the keeper give the Hoyas the 2-1 lead at the break.
  • Pitt looked the better side early in the second, but it was Georgetown that found the back of the net on a corner from Brown which was flicked in by senior Oliver Stafford to give GU the 3-1 advantage.
  • In the 64th minute, senior Matthew Van Horn broke free getting a pass at the top of the box from Baker. The senior took a shot that was saved, but the rebound went to the back post and an awaiting Baker who sent it back in for the 4-1 lead.
  • The barrage of goals continued in the 70th minute when a pass from junior Aidan Godinho sprung Baker free. A Pitt defender got a foot on the ball, but Georgetown freshman Terrance Reynolds was there to clean it up and send it back to Baker who had a wide open look to make it 5-1.
  • With just one tick on the clock, Ponce Ocampo sent a cross to the back post and sophomore Charlie Rosenthal connected to make the final 6-1 in favor of the Blue & Gray.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Pitt 21-6 and had 15 shots on goal to the Panthers' two.
  • The Hoyas managed seven corners in the game, while Pitt tallied one.
  • Junior Charlie DeMarco took the win with one save to his credit.
  • Rosenthal's goal was the first of his career.
  • The six goals was the most an opponent scored at Pitt under Head Coach Jay Vidovich.
