Second-Half Goals Lead No. 2/2 Hoyas Past Villanova

WASHINGTON – The No. 2/2 Georgetown University men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to defeat the Villanova University Wildcats, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at the Higgins Family Soccer Complex in Villanova, Pennsylvania. With the win, the Hoyas improve to 13-1-1 overall and 6-0-0 in the BIG EAST, while the Wildcats drop to 5-7-2 for the season and 0-5-1 in the league.

Head Coach Brian Wiese
  • "I think the first 30 minutes were really good. We generated around 20 shots in that window of time, and we were very prolific. Villanova has a good goalie, and you have to work to beat him. However, they are just very committed team defenders in the box. It was really good for us to be in a game where the goals didn't come as easily. In a funny way, it's what our team needed: to push through and have to scrap a little bit to get the goals. For all of our statistical dominance in some of these categories, you can't forget that (Charlie) DeMarco saved a one-on-one at 0-0. Thirty minutes into the play, that could have completely flipped the game on its head. Guys are just making plays, and today DeMarco was just as important as anybody else on the field for getting us three points."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown controlled the ball in the first half, but struggled to find the back of the net with shots going wide or over the crossbar as well as keeper Alex Yagudayev making saves.
  • The Hoyas outshot the Wildcats 20-2 in the first 45 minutes.
  • Junior goalkeeper Charlie DeMarco was key as he made a 1v1 save to keep it scoreless.
  • Senior Matthew Van Horn would turn the tide in the 71st minute when classmate Eric Howard danced down the left sideline before finding Van Horn who managed to shoot between defenders and score to make it 1-0.
  • Just five minutes later, Van Horn struck again as Howard passed it to junior Mitchell Baker who shot as the keeper came out. Van Horn made the backpost run and managed to redirect Baker's shot into the open net to give the Blue & Gray the 2-0 lead which would stand as the final.
Of Note
  • Georgetown outshot Villanova 32-8 and had 11 shots on goal to the Wildcats' two.
  • The Hoyas managed six corners in the game, while Villanova tallied two.
  • DeMarco took the win and the shutout in the net with two saves to his credit.
  • This is the second time this season and the second time of his career that Van Horn has scored two goals in a contest.
