Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Georgetown Defeats Delaware State in Season Opener

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the Delaware State University Hornets 84-47 on Monday evening in the squad's 2026-27 opener at McDonough Arena. With the win, the Hoyas start the season with a 1-0 record, while the Hornets drop to 0-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  •  "We're a defense-first team, and we make sure we get stops and try to fly all over the floor. I wanted us to be a little bit more solid today. If we were a little bit more solid. and made sure to take care of the basketball, we would have had more shot opportunities at the rim. But that's who we are and that's what we do.   When you're playing a game and get a solid lead like that, you have a chance to get some young players some time. We want to make sure that we're getting them acclimated to the game and acclimated to college basketball."
How it Happened
  • Three minutes into the contest, the Hornets tied it up at seven before layups from senior Khia Miller sandwiched a triple by Johnea Donahue as the Hoyas took the 14-7 lead.
  • The Blue & Gray used stifling defense to build a larger advantage, and managed a 7-2 run that included five points from junior Destiny Agubata to end the quarter ahead 28-14.
  • The second quarter featured runs by both squads as Delaware State closed the gap to nine early in the stanza before a layup from senior Brianna Byars sparked a 6-0 run for the Blue & Gray.
  • The Hornets answered right back with five quick points to make it a 10-point contest midway through.
  •  The squads would battle over the final minutes of the half and Georgetown went into the break, up 41-28.
  • The Hornets would cut it to 12 early in the second half, but six quick points from junior Amanda Ajobiewe sparked a 17-0 run as the Hoyas managed to pull away.
  • A triple by Ajobiewe at the buzzer capped off the 22-1 run to close out the third stanza and Georgetown led 70-37.
  • The Hoyas would continue to cruise through the fourth quarter and had the 84-47 victory at the final buzzer.
