Hoyas Hold On to Down Eagles, 75-65

WASHINGTON – The Georgetown University women's basketball team defeated the American University Eagles 75-65 on Thursday evening in a nonconference matchup at McDonough Arena against the local rival. With the win, the Hoyas start the season with a 2-0 record, while the Eagles drop to 0-1 on the year.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  •  "We are excited about winning the game, but we have our own internal standards and goals, and it has nothing to do with American. I feel like American did a great job. They made shots, they got to the free throw line, they ran their stuff and [Coach Katie] did a heck of a job with them. We have some standards that we have to meet both defensively and offensively that I don't think we met tonight, but that's okay. We're in game two, and everybody has to learn to move forward. One of the biggest things we want to make sure we do is finish plays, get rebounds and execute offensively at the end of the game. I don't feel like we did that as well as I wanted us to but all in all, we're happy with the win, and we'll move forward from here."
How it Happened
  • American hit from downtown early as the Hoyas also made buckets, but struggled to pull away.
  • AU managed to keep it close until the three-minute mark when a triple from senior Khia Miller sparked a 10-0 run to close out the quarter making it 26-11.
  • Miller led the way in the quarter with 15 points and three steals.
  • The Eagles would not go away and cut it to 14 on multiple occasions but the Hoyas always had an answer.
  • In the closing minute of the first half, junior Winner Bartholomew managed back-to-back layups and Georgetown held the 46-30 advantage going into the break.
  • Georgetown built the lead to as much as 21 in the third quarter thanks to the play of junior Destiny Agubata who had five points in a 7-2 run.
  • The Blue & Gray would not hit another field goal, however, allowing American to come back as the quarter wore on.
  • At the end of the third, Georgetown led 58-44.
  • American continued to claw its way back and cut it to 11 four different times, but the duo of Agubata and senior Brianna Byars kept the Eagles at bay.
  • The Blue & Gray held on for the eventual 75-65 victory.
Of Note
  • Byars led the way with a career-best 18 points as well as seven boards.
  • Agubata managed 17 points with a squad-best nine rebounds, and Miller also scored 17 to go along with four steals in the contest.
  • Junior Johnea Donahue was credited with six steals and also had five helpers.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 36.9% (24-65) from the field, Georgetown allowed the Eagles to shoot 44.9% (22-49) on the night.
  • GU outrebounded American, 38-32, and Georgetown forced 19 Eagle turnovers on 14 steals.
  • Molly Driscoll led the way with 23 points as one of three Eagles in double figures.
