WASHINGTON – The No. 1/1 Georgetown University men's soccer team played the UConn Huskies to a 2-2 draw on Friday evening in Storrs, Connecticut on the final day of the BIG EAST regular season. With the tie, the Hoyas move to 14-1-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the BIG EAST, while the Huskies finish 8-7-3 overall and 4-3-1 in the league to miss a championship berth by two points.
Head Coach Brian Wiese
- Well, it's the second game on the road where we've given up a really early goal, and we responded well to that. The character of this team has been very resilient, and I think we showed that again tonight. Road games in the BIG EAST are always challenging, and tonight was no different. UConn needed three points to keep their season alive, so credit to them, they were pushing hard and played a good game over the 90 minutes. I felt the guys did enough to get the result, and we're really hard done by on that late, surprising VAR penalty call. It was a tight, hard game against an opponent that was pushing, so from that regard, it was a needed game for our group for where we are right now."
How it Happened
- Similar to last game, an early giveaway in the back resulted in a UConn goal just 90 seconds into the match.
- The Hoyas did not panic and settled in looking for the equalizer.
- It would come in the 22nd minute when senior Eric Howard was taken down just outside the box. The resulting free kick allowed classmate Matthew Van Horn to fire around the wall to the back post to make it 1-1.
- Despite chances from both squads, the 1-1 tie would stand at the half.
- The go-ahead goal would come in the 54th minute off of a set piece. Van Horn served a perfect ball to the back post, and it went over the first Hoya to sophomore Noah Satriano who had moved in front of his defender and managed to head it right back in as GU took the 2-1 lead
- UConn brought everyone forward in the closing minutes trying to find another score. The opportunity came in the 88th minute as a foul deep in the box resulted in a penalty kick which was converted to tie it up at two apiece.
- The draw would stand as the score was 2-2 at the final whistle.
Of Note
- Georgetown was outshot by UConn 17-7 and had two shots on goal to the Huskies six.
- The Hoyas managed five corners in the game, while UConn tallied four.
- Junior goalkeeper Charlie DeMarco took the draw in the net with four saves to his credit.
- The tie snapped a 10-match win streak for the Hoyas.
