Georgetown Drops Regular Season Finale to DePaul

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University women's basketball team fell to the DePaul University Blue Demons 59-54 on Sunday afternoon in the BIG EAST Conference finale at McDonough Arena. With the loss, the Hoyas finish out league play with a 13-16 overall record going 6-14 in BIG EAST play, while the Blue Demons finish at 8-23 overall and 5-15 in league action.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "First off kudos to DePaul, they came out here today, and beat us to loose balls and rebounded the ball. We didn't shoot the ball as well as we would have liked, had some chippies late in the game we didn't finish and didn't hit from the line. It was disappointing. We had great energy in the second quarter, and then we came out in the second half, and didn't have it. We didn't match the same energy. We did a decent job on them defensively, but then offensively, we didn't have that spark to try to get to the rim."
How it Happened
  • DePaul came out hot from downtown, as the Hoyas went inside to counter.
  • Despite the post players working down low, the Blue Demons managed to hold a slight 18-15 advantage at the end of the first after hitting four triples in the stanza.
  • Looking at a five-point deficit midway through the second quarter, the Blue & Gray turned it up a notch on the defensive end and an and-one from sophomore Indya Davis sparked a 13-2 run to close out the half.
  • Freshman Braelynn Barnett was impressive on both ends of the floor during the run with four points and two blocks as GU led 35-29 at the break.
  • Sophomore Destiny Agubata began the scoring in the third, but a 14-1 DePaul run put the Blue Demons ahead by five.
  • A layup by graduate student Laila Jewett sparked an 8-2 run as sophomore Summer Davis closed out the stanza with a triple and GU led 46-45 after three.
  • DePaul would have the momentum in the fourth with an early 11-2 run to build the eight-point advantage.
  • The Hoyas would cut it to four on a layup from graduate student Brianna Scott, but the comeback would not emerge as the Blue & Gray eventually fell 59-54.
Of Note
  • Indya Davis led the Hoyas with 11 points and four steals.
  • Agubata and Scott tallied 10 apiece, while Agubata pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 32.8% (21-64) from the field, but allowed 41.1% (23-56) shooting by DePaul.
  • The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Blue Demons, 43-35, and GU forced 24 DePaul turnovers on 14 steals.
  • Ally Timm led the way for DePaul with 20 points as one of three Blue Demons in double figures.
