Eighth-Seeded Georgetown Falls to Top-Seeded UConn in BIG EAST Quarterfinals

UNCASVILLE, Connecticut - The eighth-seeded Georgetown University women's basketball team fell 84-39 to the top-seeded University of Connecticut Huskies (32-0) on Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament presented by JEEP Brands at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut. With the loss, the Blue & Gray finishes the season with a mark of 14-17 overall.

Head Coach Darnell Haney
  • "I'm proud of my team for getting to this point. I think we've been through some adversity this year, just like every team has been through adversity, but we've been through some adversity of our own, and we were able to get here to this point. That's a great team we just played out there. We really couldn't get into anything going on the offensive end. And then defensively, we had some mishaps. But I'm just proud of my team for their fight and their grit at the end of the season."
How it Happened
  • Georgetown struck first with free throws by graduate student Chetanna Nweke as well as a bucket from junior Khia Miller.
  • UConn answered back with a 10-0 run, but sophomore Destiny Agubata stopped it with a free throw.
  • The Huskies then hit four-straight triples, and even five late points from graduate student Laila Jewett wouldn't be enough as GU trailed 24-10 after the first.
  • The second quarter belonged to the Huskies despite 3-pointers by sophomores Khadee Hession and Summer Davis.
  • Georgetown went into the half down 47-18.
  • GU went cold in the second half as UConn pulled away, outscoring the Hoyas 22-4 in the third quarter.
  • The Hoya reserves put some points on the board near the end of the game and GU outscored UConn 17-15 in the final stanza.
  • At the final whistle, the Huskies downed the Blue & Gray 84-39.
Of Note
  • Jewett led the Hoyas with nine points as the lone Hoya in double figures
  • Graduate student Brianna Scott led the Hoyas on the glass with eight boards to go along with two points in the contest.
  • The Blue & Gray shot 24.5% (12-49) from the field, but allowed 49.2% (31-63) shooting by UConn.
  • The Hoyas were outrebounded by the Huskies, 41-33, and GU forced 12 UConn turnovers on five steals.
  • Serah Williams led the way for UConn with 14 points as one of four Huskies in double figures.
