POSITION: Graduate Assistant for Academic Support, Student-Athletes
QUALIFICATIONS: Enrolled in a Georgetown University Master’s Degree or other degree program; background in teaching, tutoring, counseling, and/or sport management; interest in working with student-athletes; detail-oriented; excellent written and verbal skills; proficiency in Excel
TERM: August 2022–May 2023
HOURS: 8-10 hours/week; must be available to supervise study hall three evenings per week and have flexibility in scheduling for individual contact hours with students, i.e. evening and/or weekends
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The main function of the Academic Support Assistant is to participate in the day to day operations of academic services and to help student-athletes become active, engaged learners. The Assistant reports to the Associate Director of the Academic Resource Center for Student-Athlete Services, Dr. Shelly K. Habel.
Specific Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform regular check-in meetings with student-athletes throughout the semester/academic year for members of the women’s squash, women’s volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, men’s and women’s rowing, men’s and women’s golf teams, men’s and women’s tennis teams, men’s and women’s sailing, baseball, football and/or softball
- Collaborate with student-athletes to develop academic skills and track academic progress
- Counsel student-athletes regarding course selection, registration, and progress toward degree
- Meet with the Associate Director and other Academic Support Assistants
- Meet with coaches as necessary
- Supervise study hall three nights per week
- Assist in organization of programming for academically at-risk student-athletes
- Send travel emails to professors during assigned team(s) travel season
- Maintain all student meeting records in ARMS (cloud-based software)
- Prepare reports and other materials on assigned team(s) academic status for the Associate Director
- Proctor exams throughout the semester, as needed
- Miscellaneous administrative tasks
Preference will be given to candidates who have experience working with student-athletes and/or who possess a teaching, tutoring and/or counseling background. Interested candidates should submit their résumé and cover letter to skh@georgetown.edu. Top candidates will be interviewed in June and July.
