Athletics Department Hosts Annual Senior Brunch

May 17, 2018

WASHINGTON - The Georgetown University Department of Athletics held its annual senior brunch on Thursday morning at the Healy Family Student Center, hosting one final event to bid farewell to the student-athletes of the Georgetown Class of 2018.

After being welcomed by Executive Director of the Cooper Athletics Leadership Program Maya Ozery, the group of more than 100 senior student-athletes were addressed by Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Lee Reed as a slideshow of their career accomplishments appeared on a screen.

The class of 2018 enjoyed enormous athletic successes, appearing in 62 BIG EAST Tournaments and bringing 13 BIG EAST Championships home to the Hilltop as well as claiming 40 BIG EAST individual titles. Competing in both the BIG EAST Conference and the Patriot League, this year's senior class combined to garner 186 postseason all-league awards. No slouches in the classroom, they also were the recipients of more than 250 academic all-league honors.

The brunch featured a keynote address from Georgetown men's soccer alum Dan Helfrich (MSB'98), who spoke to the senior class about how the lessons they have learned as a Georgetown student-athlete, both the successes and failures, have prepared them for their life beyond the Hilltop.

Men's lacrosse senior Kieran Jenkins (Millersville, Md./Severna Park), the Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) president, and women's lacrosse senior Sarah Cheney (Loudonville, N.Y./Shaker), SAAC's vice president, reflected on their time as student-athletes and moments from their GU career that they will take with them.

The athletics department also recognized the student-athlete with the highest GPA in each of Georgetown's four schools:

School of Foreign Servies - Bennett Stehr, baseball
Georgetown College -- Ryan Murphy, women's swimming & diving
Nursing and Health Studies -- Sarah Cheney, women's lacrosse
McDonough School of Business -- Benjamin Stern, men's rowing

The brunch concluded as the seniors were presented with their student-athlete graduation stoles, as well as their varsity letter plaques.
