Hoyas Set Program Scoring Record

The Georgetown University men’s golf team closed out the 2019 fall season in dominating fashion, carding a 14-under par 838 at the ODU/OBX Intercollegiate – setting the program record for 54-hole scoring in the process.

I was very proud of the guys - they played extremely well as a unit. We talked about the importance of playing three solid rounds of golf. That's what it takes to find a nice spot on the leaderboard. In our first four events, we only posted one or two solids rounds.

Traditionally a three-day event with a lone 18-hole round each day, inclement weather forced the postponement of the tournament’s opening day and pushed a 36-hole day to kick things off. The unexpected schedule shift may have been exactly what the Hoyas were waiting for all season.

There is a fine line between ‘working hard’ and ‘working TOO hard’ . We may have been working TOO hard in our four previous tournaments. We would make a bogey and just get a little too down. We needed to be a little lighter on our feet and just roll with the ups and downs of the game.

Rolling with the flow is exactly what the Hoyas did – cutting stokes off of every round as they got more and more comfortable with the Kilmarlic Golf Club in Powell’s Point, North Carolina. Georgetown shot rounds of 284, 278 and 276 – the latter two being the lowest scoring rounds of the season for the Blue & Gray.

Dominating par-3 scoring throughout the tournament, the Hoyas were -7 in par three scoring as a team with senior co-tri captains Eduardo Blochtein and Hardin Councill taking advantage of the short holes to net four strokes each from their final scores.

The ODU tournament was a special event. It was an honor to set a school record and seeing everyone's game click into gear was fun to see! We are eager to continue this momentum in the spring season and make a run for another BIG EAST title.

Blochtein, along with freshman David Rogers, finished tied for ninth overall with a 4-under 209. He was lights out on the opening day, carding rounds of 68 and 67 to sit seven strokes under par after 36 holes.

Georgetown’s depth was on display throughout the tournament as all five Hoyas contributed to the team scoring for at least one round. Every player shot at least one round under par including six rounds in the 60s.

At the beginning of the season, I thought this was one of our most talented teams during my time at Georgetown. We had freshmen and transfers that were ready to make an immediate impact as well as a strong group of returning players with a lot of tournament experience. I thought we went into the ODU event relaxed and with a good mindset to have three consistent rounds. It was great to see us put it all together and finish the fall with our strongest performance of the season. I am looking forward to keeping it going this spring as we chase another BIG EAST Championship.

Our team certainly has incredible talent and it was cool to see it all click. This event surely shows us what we are capable of as we head into the spring where we are chasing another BIG EAST title.

Georgetown’s previous program low came 16 years ago at the James Madison Invitational at the Lakeview Golf Course in Harrisonburg, Virginia as Nick Cook ’04, James Farrah ’04, David Erickson ’05, Matt Myers ’05 and Tim Moynihan ’07 combined to card a 6-under 846. The momentum would launch the fivesome to greater heights, including a bid to the 2004 NCAA Northeast Regional.

The guys now know they are capable of doing something special and that is very important as we gear up for our spring season ahead.
