Former NFL linebacker and Super Bowl Champion Jamie Sharper joined the Georgetown football program in August 2018 as an assistant coach. Sharper, who works with the team’s linebackers and pass rush, brings over 20 years of experience as both a player and a coach.
Sharper’s coaching of a position he once dominated as a player was successful as the play and productions of the linebacker core increased dramatically. In 2018, his first year working with the linebackers, the group accumulated 360% more TFL and 466% more sacks than the year prior to his arrival. Over the 2018-19 seasons, Georgetown's linebackers have accounted for 63 TFL and 28 sacks. In the past two seasons, Sharper has coached four linebackers to All-Patriot League honors and Wes Bowers, the team’s recipient of the Joe Eacobacci Memorial Jersey, has also been recognized as a Hero Sports Sophomore All-American while under the watchful eye of Sharper.
Prior to Georgetown, Sharper served as the linebackers coach at St. Augustine High School in New Orleans. In his three seasons with the Purple Knights, he led the scouting operations of the team’s opponents and played a key role in coordinating recruitment between colleges and players.
Before his tenure at St. Augustine, Sharper worked as a professional scouting intern with the NFL’s Houston Texans during the 2013 preseason. He analyzed and self-scouted offensive and defensive players to determine preseason grades. He also assisted in free agent workouts that included scouting player ability and conditioning.
Sharper enjoyed a nine-year career in the NFL, playing for three organizations. He was a second-round draft pick by the Baltimore Ravens in 1997. He played for the Ravens for five seasons, starting all but one game,’ including Baltimore’s Super Bowl XXXV victory in 2000. Sharper was taken by the Houston Texas in the expansion draft following the 2001 season and played for Houston for three seasons. In 2003, he led the NFL with 164 tackles and was selected as Houston’s Player of the Year while also being named a finalist for the Walter Payton Man of the Year Award. He played his final season with the Seattle Seahawks in 2005, helping them reach their first Super Bowl. He ended his career having played in 136-consecutive games and recording 882 tackles, 25.5 sacks and two interceptions.
A 1996 graduate of the University of Virginia with a degree in psychology, Sharper ranks second in the Virginia records books with 435 career tackles and is atop the list with 295 solo tackles.
Sharper completed his master's in sports industry management in 2020 from Georgetown University's School of Continuing Studies, with the scholarship assistance program of AthLIfe and The Trust powered by the NFLPA.
