Janel Zarkowsky

Janel Zarkowsky grew up sailing on the Chesapeake Bay competing in both single- and double-handed boats starting at age seven. She completed a Bachelor's of Arts in both cello performance and music history through Boston University in 2009. As an undergraduate, Zarkowsky was a four-year member of the BU Dinghy Sailors, competing as their women's A and keelboat skipper, as well as crew for the coed and team race teams. She placed top five in her division at numerous regattas and helped qualify the Terriers for the ICSA Women's Fleet Race National Championships all four years. After graduating, Zarkowsky continued coaching at Boston University as an assistant coach, while completing a Masters of Science in nonprofit administration.

Zarkowsky started with the Georgetown University sailing team as an assistant coach in the fall of 2012. Under her mentorship, the team has claimed more than 40 All-America individual awards, more than 35 MAISA Conference Championships, seven ICSA national titles and a gold medal at the 2014 FISU World University Championship on Lago di Ledro, Italy  in match racing.

Zarkowsky actively competes at a national and international level in fleet racing, team racing and match racing. She is currently ranked in the top 15 in women's and top 60 in open on the World Sailing Match Race Rankings.
