Melba Chambers is in her third season with the Hoyas. She returned to Georgetown in the spring of 2014 after an outstanding playing career on the Hilltop. Chambers spent over 10 years in the coaching ranks including two seasons with Head Coach Natasha Adair at the College of Charleston. She works primarily with the guards.
Last year, the Hoyas returned to the postseason for the first time since 2011-12. Georgetown went 16-14 overall marking a huge improvement from the previous year and the third best turnaround in the nation. The squad was 9-9 in BIG EAST Conference play earning the fifth seed in the conference tournament. The team's record and RPI gave GU a berth in the WNIT where the Blue & Gray lost a heartbreaker to Rutgers University at the buzzer.
Dorothy Adomako and Dionna White were both named Second Team All-BIG EAST, and White was also selected to the All-Freshman Team. Seven players were named to the BIG EAST All-Academic squad marking the most honorees in the past 10 years.
In Chamber's first year on the Hilltop, Adomako was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year, honorable mention All-BIG EAST and was a unanimous selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team.
During the 2013-14 season, in College of Charleston's first season in the Colonial Athletic Association, the team had a record of 19-15, marking the third-highest win total in the school's Division I era. Additionally, the squad finished third in conference play, defeated five postseason teams from the previous year and advanced to the semifinals of both the CAA Championship and the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI).
In her first year, Chambers helped the Cougars win 16 games and the team advanced to the quarterfinals of the WBI.
Chambers served as assistant coach/recruiting coordinator for the Bowie State Bulldogs in Bowie, Md. In that role she was also responsible for the development of the guards.
She also spent five seasons as head junior varsity coach and varsity assistant coach at her alma mater, St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, Md. She helped take the Lady Panthers to the IAAM Championship that they won four out of her five seasons.
In her time at Georgetown, Chambers was a two-time BIG EAST Player of the Week honoree and she earned MVP for the 1998-99 season. In her final season, the Hoyas advanced to the WNIT for the first time in program history. She ranks among the all-time leaders in points (973), 3-pointers (62), assists (188), blocks (30) and rebounds (365).
After graduating from Georgetown, Chambers continued her playing career as a professional in Germany for one year.
She is originally from Baltimore, Md., and resides in Camp Springs, Md.
