Big East Conference Hoya Saxa
Kate Schanuel Headshot

Kate Schanuel

Kate Schanuel was named the head coach of women’s golf at Georgetown University in July 2017.  She came to the Hilltop after spending eight seasons at Towson University. Since arriving in the District, Schanuel has twice been named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year, most recently following the 2023-24 season and for the first time after the 2017-18 season.

In her first seven seasons at the helm of the Georgetown women's golf program, the Hoyas have advanced to one NCAA Regional, won one BIG EAST team title, clinched one BIG EAST individual title and turned in a quartet of team runner-up finishes at the BIG EAST Championship.

Over seven seasons, Schanuel has coached the Blue & Gray to 10 All-BIG EAST selections, including three following the 2023-24 campaign. That same season, the Hoyas swept the conference major awards, garnering Player of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year accolades, a feat that had never been done in program history.

In her first season, Schanuel led the Hoyas to unprecedented success as the squad won five of the 11 tournaments on the schedule, including their second-consecutive BIG EAST title, advancing to the NCAA Regional in Austin, Texas.

In the classroom, the Hoyas have had 13 total recognitions for WGCA All-American Scholars, including an impressive four during the 2021-22 season.

Prior to Georgetown, Schanuel had a seven-year tenure as the Towson head coach. She led the Tigers to a fifth-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) Tournament in 2016-17. The Tigers broke 300 for a team round for the first time in program history, and established a new low for a 36-hole event, finishing with a 605 at the Towson Invitational during the fall. The team’s 310.3 tournament team average for 27 rounds eclipsed the old record by four strokes.

Towson enjoyed a strong 2015-16 season, posting six top-five finishes, including a championship at the Towson Invitational. The Tigers opened their year on a positive note at Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational, shooting a 54-hole school record 915. In 2014-15, Schanuel’s squad posted four top-five finishes in five events during the fall, including winning the 2014 Navy Fall Invitational. The Tigers also tied for the team title at the 2014 Towson Invitational, and Krissy Unger shot a school-record 70 at the Kiawah Invitational.

Schanuel joined the Towson staff as an assistant coach prior for the 2009-10 season before taking over as the head coach at the start of the 2011 spring season.  In her first event as head coach, Schanuel led the Tigers to a team win at the 2011 Lonnie Barton Memorial Invitational.

Under Schanuel's leadership, the Tigers also excelled in the classroom, as student-athletes earned Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar honors 11 times.

Prior to joining Towson's staff, she was a volunteer assistant at Georgetown (2008-09) and coached the girls' team at the Academy of the Holy Cross in Kensington, Maryland.

A former All-Atlantic Coast Conference and All-Academic selection at the University of Maryland, Schanuel graduated in 2007 with a degree in kinesiology. She was the team’s top player as a junior and senior and won three tournaments as a collegiate athlete. A team captain, Schanuel led the Terps in scoring average twice, including a 73.6 as a senior. The first female golfer at Maryland to turn pro, she competed on the Duramed FUTURES Tour, playing in 14 events.
