Freddy Mesmer

Freddy Mesmer was announced as the head coach for the 2021-22 school year on August 20, 2021. Mesmer has been part of the tennis coaching staff since August 2019.

Mesmer, a Maryland native, came to the Hilltop after a successful career competing for the Virginia Tech Hokies. Mesmer played for the Hokies from 2015-19, contending in both singles and doubles matches. He was a part of three NCAA Tournament appearances for the Hokies, and was awarded team MVP his junior season after amassing a 21-8 record in singles matches that year. Mesmer graduated with a Bachelor's of Arts in multimedia journalism.

"It is an incredible honor to become the next head coach of men's and women's tennis here at Georgetown," Mesmer said. "I want to thank Dr. Maya Ozery and Lee Reed for their support through this process and everyone in our department who has helped me along the way. Georgetown has always held a special place in my heart and for it to have led me to this position now is unimaginable. I am eager to get back to work with the men and women we have in our program and continue the momentum we have built in the last two years. This program is getting back on its feet, and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead this program to success on and off the court!"

Mesmer comes from a long and storied family in Georgetown Athletics.  His grandfather, Fred Mesmer, was part of the inaugural class of the Georgetown University Athletics Hall of Fame, inducted in 1953. Mesmer follows in the footsteps of his grandfather, who was the men's basketball head coach from 1931-38. Fred Mesmer played basketball and tennis at Georgetown in the late 1920's.

Three of Mesmer's cousins – Sheehan Stanwick (B'01), Wick Stanwick (B'03) and Coco Stanwick (B'07) – attended Georgetown and had successful lacrosse careers with the Hoyas. Sheehan Stanwick was a four-time All-American at Georgetown and was inducted into the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame and the Georgetown Athletics Hall of Fame in 2019, Wick Stanwick ranks fifth all time in goals scored in program history with 164 and Coco Stanwick was a two-time BIG EAST Attacker of the Year during her career. Mesmer's sister, Anne Mesmer (B'14), was a member of the tennis team for the 2010-11 season.

"Coach Mesmer is a wonderful choice to lead the Georgetown men's and women's tennis programs," Reed said. "Over the past year, he has done a tremendous job guiding the team through these unprecedented times and a shortened spring season. His connection to Georgetown is incredibly strong and it will help him build a culture of success on the Hilltop."
