Brian Blaney

Brian Blaney is in his third season as an assistant coach with the Georgetown men’s basketball program. As part of the coaching staff, he is responsible for recruiting, on-floor practice preparation as well as player and program development.

Blaney was part of Cooley’s staff that doubled the win total from the year before, closing the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 18-16 and a postseason appearance in the inaugural College Basketball Crown held in Las Vegas. Following the year, the duo of Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy were both selected in the 2025 NBA Draft with Sorber going in the first round with the 15th pick to the reigning NBA Champions Oklahoma City Thunder. Peavy was selected in the second round, 40th overall, by the Washington Wizards before his rights were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. It was the first time since 2008 the Hoyas had a pair of draft picks and the two draft picks marked the first two NBA Draft selections of Cooley’s tenure on the Hilltop.

In two seasons, Blaney has worked with and coached a pair of athletes who went on to earn All-BIG EAST honors with Peavy earning a nod to the first team (2025) and Sorber earning a spot on the third team (2025). Sorber was also a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team.

He arrived on the Hilltop as part of Head Coach Ed Cooley’s inaugural staff after spending the previous 15 seasons with Cooley, spending the last 12 as an assistant coach at Providence and the three prior at Fairfield as an assistant. He was instrumental in the Friar success during Cooley’s 12 seasons as the team has reached eight postseason appearances, including seven NCAA Tournament appearances.

Prior to his time at PC, Blaney spent three seasons as an assistant men's basketball coach under Cooley at Fairfield University. In his three seasons at Fairfield, the team posted a 65-34 mark (.657). Blaney helped the Stags post a school-record 25 wins and capture a Metro Atlantic regular season title in 2010-11. The team finished with a 25-8 mark and advanced to the second round of the NIT. In 2009-10, Fairfield recorded a 23-11 mark and earned the team's first postseason berth since 2003.

Prior to coaching at Fairfield, Blaney spent four seasons as a member of the Loyola (Maryland) basketball staff. He was an assistant coach with the Greyhounds for the first two seasons before moving into the associate head coach position for 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Blaney was an assistant coach for one year at Miami (Ohio) University under Herb Sendek. He helped the team earn a berth to the 1996 National Invitation Tournament (NIT), and coached Wally Szczerbiak through his first year as a college player.

From there, Blaney accepted an assistant coaching position at George Washington University, where he worked with Mike Jarvis for two seasons and Tom Penders for one year. During his tenure, the Colonials participated in one NIT (1997) and two NCAA Tournaments (1998 and 1999).

After his three-year stay with George Washington, Blaney joined Nick Macarchuk's staff at Fordham University. He stayed with Macarchuk when he took the Stony Brook University position, leading the Seawolves transition from Division II to Division I. Blaney stayed on staff for five years, leaving the program following the 2003-04 campaign.

He began his coaching career as an assistant at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, where he spent one season following his graduation from Roanoke College in 1994.

At Roanoke College, Blaney helped lead the Maroons to a 61-20 record during his four-year career, and a berth to the Division III Tournament as a senior. He earned his bachelor's degree in sociology.

He is the son of former coach George Blaney, who served as the head coach at the College of the Holy Cross and Seton Hall University and associate head coach at the University of Connecticut.
