LaDontae Henton Headshot - 2324 Polo

LaDontae Henton

LaDontae Henton serves as the director of player development and assistant coach in his third season as part of Head Coach Ed Cooley’s staff. Henton spent the previous two seasons as a member of Cooley's staff at Providence and was promoted to the associate director of player development, scouting and recruiting coordination position before his second season.

Henton was part of Cooley’s staff that doubled the win total from the year before, closing the 2024-25 season with an overall record of 18-16 and a postseason appearance in the inaugural College Basketball Crown held in Las Vegas. Following the year, the duo of Thomas Sorber and Micah Peavy were both selected in the 2025 NBA Draft with Sorber going in the first round with the 15th pick to the reigning NBA Champions Oklahoma City Thunder. Peavy was selected in the second round, 40th overall, by the Washington Wizards before his rights were traded to the New Orleans Pelicans. It was the first time since 2008 the Hoyas had a pair of draft picks and the two draft picks marked the first two NBA Draft selections of Cooley’s tenure on the Hilltop.

In two seasons, Henton has worked with and coached a pair of athletes who went on to earn All-BIG EAST honors with Peavy earning a nod to the first team (2025) and Sorber earning a spot on the third team (2025). Sorber was also a unanimous selection to the All-Freshman Team.

In July 2021, Henton was hired as the special assistant to the head coach at PC. His time with the Friars was his second stint in Providence as the former Friar played for the team from 2011-2015 while getting his degree in social science.

In two seasons as a member of Cooley’s staff, Henton helped the Friars to back-to-back NCAA tournament appearances and Providence won the BIG EAST Regular Season Title for the first time ever.

The Friars defeated South Dakota State (66-57) in the First Round of the 2022 NCAA Tournament and Richmond (79-51) in the Second Round to advance to the Sweet 16. The Friars made their first appearance in the Sweet 16 since 1997 and their sixth appearance overall.   The team was defeated by eventual national champion Kansas, 66-61, in the Midwest Regional.

Henton led the Friars to three postseason berths (one NIT, two NCAAs) and one BIG EAST title (2014) in his four seasons as a student-athlete at Providence. Henton became the second Friar ever to score more than 2,000 points and grab 1,000 rebounds in his career. He ranks second all-time in scoring (2,059 points) and fifth all time in rebounding (1,054 rebounds). As a senior, he was named Associated Press Honorable Mention All-America, First Team ALL-BIG EAST, United States Basketball Writers Association District 1 Player of the Year and USBWA All-District 1 Team.

After graduating from Providence, Henton spent six years playing professional basketball.  He began his pro career in Spain, but he also has played in the Philippines, Hungary, Israel and had several stints in the G League.  In 2020-21, he played for the Hsinchu Lioneers of the P League in Taiwan during his final professional season.

Henton lives in Northern Virginia with his daughter, Aleena, and her mother, Karina Garcia.
