Washington, D.C.---The Georgetown University men?s swimming and diving team defeated visiting Loyola College on Saturday, 131-106, in the Hoyas? first dual meet of the 2001-2002 season. The meet consisted of 13 events and remained close until the finish.
Junior Jim McLaughlin (Plantsville, Conn./Southington) began a weekend of extraordinary athletic accomplishment by winning two events at the meet. McLaughlin won both the 500 yard and the 1000 yard free races, with times of 4:58.05 and 10:17.12, respectively. In both races, Hoya Edmund Caulfield (So./Caldwell, N.J./St. Peter?s Prep) finished a close second. McLaughlin and Caulfield joined teammates Kirill Choulga (Fr./Exeter, N.H./Exeter Academy) and Will Miller (Sr./Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold) in winning the 400 yard free relay, the meet?s final event. Following his triple win on Saturday, McLaughlin ran in Sunday?s twenty-six mile Marine Core Marathon in Washington, D.C., and completed the race in four hours and 13 minutes.
Kirill Choulga, in addition to his win in the 400 yard free relay, took first place in the 50 yard free, with a time of 22.79. Sophomore Shodai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary?s International) won the 100 yard free and finished second in the 200 yard free, while fellow sophomore Michael Kizer (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) won the 3 meter dive and finished second in the 1 meter dive. In the 200 yard breast, Georgetown had its four swimmers finish in second through fifth place, with Peter Nguyen (Fr./North Potomac, Md./Heights School), Brendan Griffin (Fr./Andover, Mass./St. John?s Prep), William Sehestedt (Fr./Missoula, Mont./Hellgate) and Michael Dowley (Jr./McLean, Va./Langley) completing the race in that order.
