Washington, D.C. (November 10, 2001)? Georgetown fell behind 14-3 in the first quarter and could not recover, losing to Lafayette 37-17 at Kehoe Field. Georgetown's record now stands at 3-6 and 0-5 in the Patriot League. Lafayette won their first Patriot League game of the year (1-5) and improves their overall record to 2-7.
On the Leopards' first possession they marched 79 yards and scored a touchdown on a Joe McCourt four-yard run. GU came right back on the next possession and had an 11-play drive. Sean Peterson (Gaithersburg, Md./Watkins Mill) connected with Kurt Bennett (Burlington, Mass./ Belmont Hill School) on a 41-yard pass to move the Hoyas to the Lafayette 21. The drive ended on the Lafayette five yard line where Marc Samuel (Anchorage, Ky./Ballard) booted a 23-yard field goal to make the score 7-3. Lafayette then took the ball and with 3:12 remaining in the quarter quarterback Marko Glavic threw a fade pass to John Weyrauch for a 28-yard touchdown. The teams traded punts to start the second quarter and after a GU missed field goal and a Lafayette punt GU's Peterson hit John Sims (Monaco, Pa./Center) out of the backfield for a 67-yard completion. Two plays later Peterson threw a five-yard pass to Luke McArdle (Boxford, Mass./Phillips Academy) to close the gap to 14-10. Lafayette finished the half with two scoring drives. The first was an 80-yard touchdown drive and the second was a Martin Brecht 24-yard field goal as time expired to up their lead to 24-10.
In the second half the Leopards were able to continue running the ball and scored two touchdowns in the third quarter. The first was a three-yard pass from Glavic to Tim Walsh and the second an eight yard run by McCourt. The Hoyas closed out the scoring on the day with a Ryan Franken (Carol Stream, Ill./ Driscoll Catholic) 11-yard reception in the fourth quarter.
GU was unable to contain the run during the game and Lafayette gained 276 yards on the ground. McCourt led the Leopards with 184 yards and two touchdowns. GU's Peterson racked up 295 yards through the air and he completed 22 of 36 with two touchdowns. The Hoyas' Bennett led the receiving corp with five grabs for 80 yards. Lafayette's Glavic completed 17-25 for 208 yards and two touchdowns. Glavic's main target was Weyrauch who finished the day with seven receptions for 122 yards.
Defensively middle linebacker Matthew Craffey (Wyckoff, N.J./ Bergen Catholic) led the Hoyas with eight tackles and Matt Fronczke (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) had seven unassisted tackles. Lafayette recorded seven sacks on the day, led by Casey McKeen with 2.5. McKeen also led the Leopards in tackles with eight.
Georgetown will play its final game of the season next Saturday, November 17, at 12:30 p.m. on Kehoe Field against Towson.
