The Georgetown University men's and women's swimming and diving teams obtained another victory against the Friars of Providence College on Saturday, January 26. Georgetown's women's team was led by an impressive performance by freshman Michelle Herd (Canton, Center, Conn./Westminster). Herd set a pool and school record in the 200 Backstroke event, with a time of 2:09.28. The previous pool record, set in 1995, was 2:09.40, while the old school record was stood from 1997 at 2:09.53.
In other women events GU recorded several first place finishes. Hoyas Herd, Diane Foglizzo (Rosemont, Pa./The Baldwin School), Caragh Moynihan (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) and Amanda Anderson (Denville, N.J./Morristown Beard) placed first in the 400 Medley Relay with a time of 4:08.15. Moynihan placed first in two other events: the 50 yard Freestyle with a time of 25.91 and the 100 Freestyle event with 54.99. Anderson also finished first in both the 200 Freestyle (2:01.34) and the 500 Freestyle (5:17.64), while Foglizzo snatched first place in the 200 IM (2:16.32). In the 200 yard Butterfly event, junior Katie Hayes (Charlottesville, VA/Albermarle HS) finished first with a time of 2:14.47. In diving, sophomore Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina) placed first in the 1 meter Diving Competition with a final score of 231.75.
In the men's action, sophomore Shodai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary?s International) took first place in the 50 Yard Freestyle (22.20) and in the 100 Yard Freestyle (49.30). Freshman Brendan Griffin (Andover, MA/ St. John?s Prep) also placed first in the 1000 Freestyle (10:11.06), while senior Chris Lengle (Arlington, Va./Washington and Lee) finished first in the 200 IM with a time of 2:00.94. Hoyas Will Miller (Farmingdale, N.J./Freehold), Matt O?Connor (Phoenix, Ariz./Phoenix Country Day), Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony's) and Lengle finished first in the 200 Medley Relay with a time of 1:41.27. In diving, sophomore Michael Kizer (Atlanta, GA/Westminster) placed first in the 1 meter Diving event with a final score of 222.90.
Georgetown men's and women's swimming and diving will be in action again on Saturday February 2 when they match up at home against Drexel at 1:00 p.m.
