Easton, Pa. ? Georgetown University?s football team traveled to Easton, Pa. for the first time in the history of the program and fell to Lafayette 35-17. The loss drops the Hoyas overall record to 2-5 and 0-4 in the Patriot League. With the win Lafayette stays unbeaten in the Patriot League with a 2-0 mark and is 4-3 overall.
The Hoyas ran for 212 yards and ended the game with 316 yards of total offense. Quarterback David Paulus (Manlius, N.Y./CBA) led the rushing and passing attack for GU running for 76 yards and throwing for 129. Lafayette posted 397 yards of offense mainly through the air courtesy of Marko Glavic who ended the day hitting 22-of-34 passes for 275 yards including 162 to wideout John Weyrauch.
Lafayette went on an 11-play drive on their first possession and ended it with a touchdown on a nine-yard pass from Glavic to Joe McCourt. GU?s ensuing possession lasted three plays but a nine-play drive by the Panthers was thwarted by a strong pass rush from Andrew Clarke (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) that forced a third down incompletion.
GU fell behind 14-0 early in the second quarter when LC?s McCourt ran the ball in from six yards out with 11:18 to play in the half. The Hoyas marched into Lafayette territory to set up a 42-yard field goal for kicker Michael Gillman (Miami, Fla./Killian) cutting the Panther lead to 14-3. A Glavic 59-yard touchdown bomb to Weyrauch combined with a missed 45-yard field goal by GU?s Gillman made the score 21-3 Lafayette with 2:12 to play. After a Lafayette punt the Hoyas? William Huisking (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) coughed up the ball on the Georgetown 15 and Lafayette hit a 17-yard toss to wide out Archie Fisher giving LC a 28-3 lead at the half.
To start the second half Lafayette marched into the Hoya red zone but on fourth and goal from the two GU?s defense held. The Hoya offense took over and moved the ball inside the Lafayette 20 after a flea flicker from Paulus to Walter Bowser (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) accounted for 36 yards. A fourth down attempt from Lafayette?s 13 came up empty and GU gave the ball back to the Panthers.
The Panthers had an 11-play 48-yard scoring drive midway through the fourth quarter to give LC a 35-3 lead with 8:52 to play. Georgetown?s Paulus connected with Kurt Bennett (Burlington, Mass./Belmont Hill School) for two touchdown passes of 11 and 15 yards in the final four minutes to complete the game?s scoring.
Georgetown comes home next Saturday after a 1-1 road record the last two weeks. The Hoyas host Bucknell on October 26 at 1 p.m. on Harbin Field.
