Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Georgetown football returned to Harbin Field this Saturday to host the Rams of Fordham University. Playing without leading rusher sophomore John Sims (Monaco, Pa./ Center), who was injured in last week?s game at Florida International University, the Hoyas fell to Fordham, 41-10. The Hoya loss is the third this season in Patriot League play and the fourth overall, putting the team at 1-4.

Georgetown moved the ball early in the game. The team?s first points, a 24-yard field goal by freshman place-kicker Michael Gillman (Miami, Fla./Killian), came with 4:51 left in the first quarter after starting sophomore quarterback Andrew Crawford (Superior, Colo./ Fairview) engineered an impressive drive that moved the Hoyas 62 yards on 10 plays over a span of almost five minutes. The Rams responded quickly after the subsequent kickoff, however, scoring a touchdown with only two plays -- a 48-yard pass from starting quarterback Kevin Eakin to wide-receiver Steve Porco and a 20 yard run by fullback Alemayo Whyte.

In the second quarter, with Fordham leading by a score of 14-3, the Hoyas found themselves in another scoring opportunity after Georgetown senior punter David Paulus (Manilus, N.Y./ CBA) boomed a 56-yard punt to pin Fordham deep in their own territory. Defensive tackle senior Matt Korcinsky (Greenville, Pa./ Greenville) sacked Eakin on the following play, pushing the line of scrimmage back to the Fordham 19 yard-line. Next, while being pursued by a host of Hoya defensive players, Eakin made an ill-advised pass that was picked off by junior outside linebacker Charles Boyle (Derwood, Md./ Good Counsel) and the Hoyas took over possession at the Fordham 24 with 8:51 left in the half. Georgetown failed to capitalize on the situation. After pushing deep into the red zone, Crawford?s would-be touchdown pass was seized in the endzone by Fordham defensive back Chris Rhodes, who returned the interception 33 yards before being stopped by Hoya wide receiver Luke McArdle (Boxford, Mass./ Masconomet Regional).

Paulus substituted in for Crawford at quarterback to begin the second half. Georgetown paraded 94 yards down the field on nine plays in a four-minute drive and scored a second time in the closing seconds of the third quarter. Favored Hoya receiver McArdle, who only touched the ball once during the first half, was particularly key in the scoring drive with three receptions for 74 yards. Paulus capped the scoring drive for the Hoyas as he found senior tight end Bo Cote (Arlington, Va./ Landon) in the endzone for a touchdown. After Gillman hit the extra point, the score stood at 34-10 in Fordham?s favor.

Fordham added to its victory margin early in the fourth quarter. Exhibiting a potent offense that over the course of the day put together 549 net yards on 61 total plays, Fordham scored on the opening play of the quarter, a 59-yard pass from Eakin to Javarus Dudley. Dudley led Rams receivers with 224 yards receiving on seven catches, three of which he brought into the endzone for touchdowns. The PAT put Fordham on top 41-10, which was to become the final score. Crawford came back in for the Hoyas at quarterback late in the fourth quarter after Paulus injured his foot.

Between the efforts of Crawford and Paulus, Georgetown put together 16 passing completions on 25 attempts for a total of 187 yards. McArdle was on the receiving end for four of those completions and 85 of the total 187 yards. Wide receiver senior Trenton Hillier (Chagrin Falls, Ohio/ Kenston) also had four catches. The leading Hoya rusher was the fullback William Huisking (Allendale, N.J./ Northern Highlands), who rumbled for 32 net yards on three touches. Freshman Marcus Slayton (Cleveland, Ohio/ Benedictine), in the game at halfback for the injured Sims, also provided some push for the Hoyas, gaining 30 yards on 10 rushes.

Georgetown football bounces back next Saturday, when the team travels to North Carolina to play Davidson College. Georgetown?s next home game is October 26, when they will take on the Bison
