Georgetown Men Edge Delaware in Swimming and Diving

11/4/2002

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? On parent?s weekend at McCarthy Pool the Hoyas competed against Georgia Southern and the University of Delaware in men?s and women?s swimming and diving events. The Georgetown men edged Delaware 125.00 to 112.00, taking the top two spots in the one and three meter diving events as well as finishing in the top-2 of the 200 free and 200 fly. Despite some excellent showings the men?s meet came down to the final event, the 400 freestyle relay, the winner gaining enough points for an overall victory. The Georgetown men swam an excellent race to edge Delaware by less than two seconds for the team win. The women took on Georgia Southern and Delaware, falling 101.00 to 135.00 against Georgia Southern and 92.00 to 139.00 against Delaware. Michelle Herd (Canton Center, Conn./Westminster) was the fastest Hoya in the 200 back, taking top spot with a time of 2:12.49 while Annie Moore (Blacksburg, Va./The Bolles School) touched second in the 500 free behind Kim Fields of Delaware.

The men?s diving team dominated its portion of the meet, finishing first and second in the one and three meter event. Michael Kizer (Atlanta, Ga./Westminster) took two firsts while Alan Fong (San Rafael, Calif./Marin Catholic) placed second in both events. Georgetown?s Shondai Enters (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary?s International) paced the swim team with two firsts in the 100 and 50 free while Brad Perez (Tampa, Fla./Jesuit High School) placed first in the 200 fly and Stephen Ferguson (Wilmington, Del./Salesianum High) led the pack in the 200 back. In the meet?s most interesting development, senior Captain Bryan Evangelista (Northport, N.Y./St. Anthony?s), competing with a broken hand suffered last in last weekend?s meet, took the 200 free and led off for the Hoyas in the deciding event of the meet, the 400 freestyle relay. With Delaware and Georgetown neck and neck at the end, the squad to finish first in the relay would capture the overall lead and guarantee a win. Evangelista broke out to an early lead, outpacing the field. Ted Lin (Columbus, Ohio/Columbus Academy) and Edmund Caulfield (Caldwell, N.J./St.Peter?s Prep) maintained Georgetown?s strong race but anchor and senior Captain Jim McLaughlin (Plantsville, Conn./Southington H.S.) turned on the jets and swam at a blistering pace to touch ahead of Delaware with 1.35 seconds to spare.

On the women?s side the Hoyas faced two tough opponents but were able to hold their own in a number of events. Herd and Moore had first place finishes while Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif/Covina High) took second in the three meter dive and Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame), Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La.), Liz D?Auria (Newton, Mass./Newton South), and Bonilla had third place finishes on the afternoon.

The Georgetown men and women?s swimming and diving teams return to McCarthy Pool on Saturday November 9 at 1:00pm to face visiting Binghamton and Seton Hall.
