Miami, Fla. ? The Georgetown University football team traveled to Miami for the first time in 50 years and was defeated by the Florida International University Golden Panthers 27-2 on a 90-degree day in front of 6,084. The loss drops GU to 1-3 on the season while FIU raises its record to 3-2.
Georgetown started off with a 2-0 lead two minutes into the game when FIU?s long snapper put the ball over the punter?s head and out of the endzone giving the Hoyas a safety. Both teams were forced to punt after three plays on their next two possessions. On GU?s third drive of the game the Hoyas faced a third and 13 at the Georgetown 31. Andrew Crawford (Superior, Colo./Fairview) completed a 10-yard pass to Walter Bowser (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham) to bring up fourth down. GU?s punter David Paulus (Manlius, N.Y./CBA) took the snap and ran right side on a fake punt for eight yards and a Georgetown first down. On first down Crawford escaped the FIU rush and gained 11 yards but on the next play Hoya tailback John Sims (Monaco, Pa./Center) coughed up the football and FIU recovered on their 41-yard line. The Golden Panthers mixed the run and pass and found the endzone after 11 plays on a 17-yard pass from quarterback Jamie Burke to wide out Adam Gorman. FIU missed the extra point. Penalties limited the Hoyas on their final possession of the first quarter and GU punted to begin the second.
The second quarter produced 21 points for the Golden Panthers. Up 6-2 FIU?s Burke hit wide receiver Joe Struyf on a 38-yard pass with 13:04 to play giving the Panthers a 13-2 lead. On the ensuing possession Crawford had a pass batted at the line on third and 12 and the Hoyas turned the ball over after a six-play drive. After an 11-yard sack by Matt Korcinsky (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) FIU was in a third and 18 position at the Georgetown 38. FIU handed the ball to Roshod Smith who weaved his way through the Hoya defense and into paydirt giving FIU a 20-2 lead. With 7:36 to play in the half Georgetown took over and moved the ball into FIU territory. A roughing the passer penalty on the fifth play of the drive helped the GU cause. FIU?s defense stiffened up and the Hoyas faced fourth and four at the FIU 38. On fourth down Crawford was tackled for a loss with 3:06 to go in the half. FIU?s starting quarterback was injured on the next drive and was replaced by David Tabor. Tabor?s second pass of the game went for 39 yards and a score as Cory McKinney hauled in the pass for FIU giving the Golden Panthers a 27-2 halftime lead.
Both teams traded possessions for the remaining 30 minutes of the game. Georgetown was able to move the ball into FIU territory once in the second half, mounting a drive late in the fourth quarter that stalled on the FIU 30. GU?s defense did its job in the last two quarters, keeping FIU off the scoreboard and only allowing two drives to go more than six plays.
Hoya starting tailback Sims was injured in the second quarter and was replaced by Kim Sarin (Roseville, Minn./Cretin-Derham) who also went down with an injury early in the second half. Leading GU in rushing was fullback William Huisking (Allendale, N.J./Northern Highlands) with 33 yards on seven carries. Crawford started his first career game at quarterback and went 9-for-21 for 120 yards and no interceptions. Bowser led the receiving corps with four grabs for 61 yards.
Defensively GU?s Andrew Clarke (Ridgewood, N.J./Ridgewood) had 10 total tackles to top the list. William Skultety (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast) came to his home state and recorded eight stops including two sacks and seven solo jobs. Free safety Jason Carter (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick) also made eight tackles.
Georgetown is back in D.C. for their next contest as the Hoyas host Patriot League rival Fordham on October 5 at 1 p.m. on Harbin Field.
