WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Lehigh Mountain Hawks rode their high-powered offense to a 45-24 win, their third victory over the Hoyas in the past three years. Lehigh Quarterback Kyle Keating led the offense with 344 yards on 32 of 43 completions, and six touchdown passes. Georgetown?s record stands at 1-3 in Patriot League play and 3-5 overall while Lehigh is tied for the conference lead at 3-0 and is 5-3 overall.
After recovering a fumble by the Hoyas on their initial drive, the Mountain Hawks tallied their first TD. Lehigh scored touchdowns on each of their first three possessions, and a field goal on their fourth. The Hoyas, on the other hand, converted only one first down before facing a 21-0 deficit.
Unable to find an offensive rhythm, Coach Bob Benson turned to freshman quarterback Alondzo Turner (Capitol Heights, Md. /Bladensburg) to provide a spark for the offense. Turner led the Hoyas on a seven play, 72-yard drive that culminated with a 20-yard touchdown pass to receiver Luke McArdle (Sr., Boxford, Mass /Masconomet Regional (Phillips Academy)). Benson stuck with Turner from thereon out, and he was able to lead the Hoyas on 75-yard drive late in the second quarter for a Hoyas? field goal.
Unfortunately for the Hoyas, Lehigh matched the Georgetown touchdown with another one of their own, leaving the Hoyas with a 31-10 deficit late in the first half. The Hoyas caught a break with 1:39 left in the half when Jason Carter (Jr., North Brunswick, N.J. / North Brunswick) returned an interception 37 yards for a touchdown, making the score 31-17 going into the break.
The Hoyas built on their momentum from Carter?s interception return by opening the third quarter with a fumble recovery in Lehigh territory and another Turner to McArdle touchdown on the ensuing drive. The Hoyas were right back in it, trailing by only seven.
Lehigh once again relied on their offense, scoring touchdowns on two straight drives, both on passes from Keating to Adam Bergen, his second and third touchdown catches of the day. The count remained 45-21, Lehigh, for the remainder of the contest.
The Mountain Hawks out gained the Hoyas offensively, 456 yards to 292. The Hawks also converted 7 of 14 third downs, while the Hoyas converted on 1 of 10.
Georgetown?s next game is next Saturday, November 1st, at Fordham, the Hoyas return to Harbin Field on November 8th when they host Towson at 12:30 p.m.
