WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Towson Tigers (5-5, 3-3) defeated the Georgetown Hoyas by a score of 27-6, handing GU its seventh loss of the season. After trailing 6-0, the Tigers scored 27 unanswered points. The Hoyas? record stands at 3-7 overall, and 1-5 in Patriot League play.
The Hoyas got on the board first with a 52-yard interception return by Matt Fronczke (Sr., Downers Grove, Ill. /Benet Academy), his career first. The ensuing extra point was blocked, so the score stood at 6-0 at the 8:32 mark in the first quarter. The Tigers responded with a 14-play 55-yard scoring drive at the end of the first quarter, capped off by a four-yard touchdown run by Matt Romeo. The successful extra point, made the score 7-6, a score that would not change until midway through the fourth quarter.
Georgetown had first and goal from Towson?s one-yard line with 25 seconds left in the first half and came away empty. The opportunity was set up by a 34-yard completion up the sideline from quarterback Drew Crawford (Jr., Superior, Colo./Fairview) to a streaking Luke McArdle (Sr., Boxford, Mass./Masconomet Regional (Phillips Academy)). Freshman quarterback Alondzo Turner (Fr., Capitol Heights, Md./Bladensburg) came in to sneak the ball into the end zone, but was stuffed at the line of scrimmage. Georgetown elected to settle for a field goal and a halftime lead, but the Tigers blocked the 18-yard attempt.
With time winding down in the fourth quarter and Towson leading by the slimmest of margins, the Tigers hit on a 71-yard flea-flicker from Anthony Melzi to Jason Galloway, giving the Tigers a 14-6 lead.
The Hoyas tried to surge back, but they would have to do it without their leading receiver McArdle, who finally came out of the game after playing hurt for most of the second half. With all eyes on Crawford, the junior quarterback tried to lead the Hoyas to a late comeback victory, but the show was stolen by Towson cornerback Davon Telp, who intercepted passes on two consecutive Georgetown drives, and ran both back for touchdowns of 49 and 95 yards respectively.
The Tigers out gained the Hoyas on the ground, 200-95. The Tigers got 185 of those yards from Romeo, who had his breakout game of the season, coming into the game with only 294 yards on the year.
Georgetown?s next and final home game is on Saturday, November 15, versus Davidson at 12:30 on Harbin Field.
