Hoya Swimming Earns Dual Meet Wins

WASHINGTON, D.C. ? The Georgetown swimming and diving program claimed dual meet victories over the VMI men, Radford women, and both the men?s and women?s teams from Howard University Saturday at McCarthy Pool.

The Georgetown men outscored the Howard men, 159-53, and defeated the VMI men by a score of 150-78. Meanwhile, the Georgetown women defeated Radford, 148-82, and topped the Howard women by a score of 186-34.

The Hoyas? diving continued to be a strong point, as seniors Juliana Bonilla (West Covina, Calif./Covina High) and Kathryn Harrison (Morristown, N.J./The Hotchkiss School) qualified for the NCAA zone diving meet on the one-meter. On Saturday, Bonilla led all participants in the women?s one-meter diving with a score of 209.33. Harrison trailed in second with a mark of 208.35.

On the men?s side, freshman Terry Huang (S. Pasadena, Calif./Loyola) won the one-meter diving with a mark of 255.30.

Other winning efforts from the Hoyas on the day came from Kevin Rieffel (Ambler, Pa./La Salle College High) in the men?s 1000yd freestyle, Cori Rafaelli (Oxnard, Calif./ Ventura College) in the women?s 500yd freestyle, Colleen Newman (Staten Island, N.Y./Notre Dame) in the women?s 200yd breaststroke, Brendan Griffin (Andover, Mass./ St. John?s Prep) in the men?s 200yd breaststroke, Mary Mason (Chicago, Ill./ St. Ignatius) in the women's 200yd backstroke, McKay Elliott (Gaithersburg, Md./Georgetown Vistation) in the women?s 50yd freestyle, Katie Amaro (Shreveport, La./Loyola Prep) in the women?s 1000yd freestyle and 100yd freestyle, Jon Hayden (Woodbridge, Va./Osbourn Park) in the men?s 200yd freestyle and 200yd butterfly, Kevin Walsh (Bethesda, Md./Saint Anselms) in the men?s 200yd IM and 500yd freestyle, Georgetown?s 400yd women?s medley relay, and the Hoyas? men?s and women?s 400yd freestyle relay.

The program will next travel to Easton, Pa., on Jan. 24 for a meet hosted by Lafayette College. The event is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
