WASHINGTON, D.C. -- A rejuvenated Georgetown offense led the Hoyas (2-4, 0-3) to a 21-0 victory over Virginia Military Institute (0-6) in the Hoyas? annual homecoming game. Senior quarterback Drew Crawford (Superior, Colo./Fairview), making his first start since the opening week victory over St. Francis, connected on 12 of 16 passes for 188 yards and a touchdown. Junior Kim Sarin (Roseville, Minn./Cretin-Derham) led the Hoyas on the ground, rushing for 180 yards (ninth most by a Hoya since 1970) on 31 carries (third most since 1970) and threw a career first 28-yard touchdown toss.
The Hoyas came out of the gate on fire, moving the ball down the field and scoring on the first possession of the game. The 65-yard drive concluded with Crawford taking it in himself from the seven-yard line. Crawford?s touchdown run was one of his 17 rushes on the day for 64 yards. After Crawford established himself as a running and passing threat, the Hoyas decided that Sarin should do the same. Sarin connected with Janeiro Wooten (Sr., Oxon Hill, Md. / Oxon Hill) for a 28-yard touchdown strike on a halfback option pass to put the Hoyas up 14-0.
Georgetown capped off an impressive first half with a final touchdown drive. The Hoyas advanced the ball from the 24 to their own 41, when an errant snap looked to send the Hoyas back to their starting point. However, Crawford alertly picked up the snap, split two defenders, and launched a 59- yard touchdown pass to Glenn Castergine (Jr., Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J. / Northern Highlands) for the Hoyas? third score.
The Hoya defense was dominating all game, allowing no points for the first time since the 1999 season. VMI was also limited to only 156 yards of total offense and just 18 plus minutes of possession time. The defense stopped the Keydets on three of four fourth down attempts, two of which were well into Georgetown territory. Georgetown?s defense entered the game tied for 11th in the nation for turnovers caused and added one interception by senior Jason Carter (North Brunswick, N.J./North Brunswick). Also making the going rough for VMI was sophomore defensive end Alex Buzbee (Chester, N.J./Seton Hall Prep) who recorded three sacks and five tackles on the day. The shutout marks the first time the Keydets have not scored in 38 games.
The Hoyas are off next week and will return to action on October 23rd at Monmouth.
