Hoya Football Sharp in Opener, Defeating St. Francis 36-7

9/4/2004

Box Score

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The Georgetown University football team (1-0) started the 2004 season looking as if they were already in midseason form.  The Hoyas defeated the Red Flash of St. Francis (0-1) by a score of 36-7, including five field goals from kicker Michael Gillman (Jr., Miami, Fla. / Killian) that set an all-time team record.

The Hoyas played the field position game right from the beginning, pinning St. Francis back with good kickoffs and defensive stops, and taking over with good field position each time.  The Hoya offense moved the ball effectively, but was unable to put the ball in the end zone, leading to a barrage of four first half field goals by Gillman.  Not only was Gillman busy continuously hitting kicks, but he also found time to make two impressive open field tackles during kickoff return duties, which almost certainly saved touchdowns.

Another big special teams play, a punt block by Derek Franks (So., Austin, Texas/ Reagan) returned to the eight yard line by Craig Agnello (Sr., Glen Rock, N.J./ Glen Rock) led to the Hoyas? only touchdown of the half, an eight-yard pass from Drew Crawford (Sr., Superior, Colo./ Fairview) to Glenn Castergine (Jr., Ho-Ho-Kus, N.J./ Northern Highlands).  The Hoyas entered the break leading 19-7.

The Georgetown defense turned dominant in the second half, allowing no points and causing two turnovers.  The first was a Mikey Blainefield (Fr., Monessen, Pa./ Monessen) interception returned to the St. Francis 20 that set up another Georgetown touchdown, and the second was on a Dan Cordisco (Jr., Dublin, Calif. / Dublin (St. Mary's(Calif.)) fumble recovery who took it himself 58 yards for the score.

Although the Hoya offense never put together a long scoring drive, there were several high points of the unit?s first performance under new offensive coordinator Elliot Uzelac.  The Hoyas rushed for 247 yards, led by Kim Sarin?s (Jr., Roseville, Minn. / Cretin-Derham) 154 yards on the ground, a career high for the junior.  Crawford looked much more poised in the new system, completing 11 of 20 passes for 100 yards, and demonstrating mobility, rushing for 38 yards and picking up several key first downs.

Although the Red Flash out passed the Hoyas 185 to 100, they were stopped dead in their tracks on the ground, rushing for only 13 yards on 28 carries.  St. Francis was also hurt by their two turnovers which both resulted in Hoya touchdowns.  Georgetown meanwhile, played turnover free football.

The Hoyas next face Lafayette on Saturday, September 11th, at home on Harbin Field. Kick off is 1 p.m. for the both teams' first Patriot League contest.
