Head Coach Bob Benson Resigns

Dec. 20, 2005

Washington DC - Georgetown University head football coach Bob Benson resigned from his position, effective immediately, it was announced today by Athletics Director Bernard Muir.

"We are grateful for Bob's service and guidance during his time here," Muir said. "He guided the program when we first started at the I-AA level and to our current spot in the Patriot League. We wish him well in his future pursuits."

Benson was at the helm of the Hoya program for 13 years, guiding Georgetown to a 72-64 record in that span. He took over as head coach in 1993, when the Hoyas made the jump to compete at the NCAA Division I-AA level. While playing in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference, the Hoyas became one of the top teams in the league, posting a 39-13 record from 1995-99. Georgetown went 9-2 in 1998 and 1999, respectively, tying the school record for wins in a season.

Benson came to Georgetown after serving as an assistant coach and defensive coordinator at Johns Hopkins University.

A national search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
