Georgetown football played its second scrimmage on Thursday, August 25th. Senior tailback Kim Sarin gives GUHoyas a inside look at the Hoyas as they get ready for the season opener at Bucknell on Saturday, September 3, at 6 p.m.
Senior Kim Sarin:
The football team finished preseason with another inter-squad scrimmage on August 25th before we began preparing for our opening game against Bucknell.
For the past four years that I have been a member of the football team, the quarterback position has been extremely competitive. This year was not any different. It might have been the most competitive battle that I have seen here at Georgetown. The coaches had a second live scrimmage in order to make sure they had the right man for the job. With further reviews of the scrimmage films, the coaching staff named Nick Cangelosi as the starting quarterback for the opener.
The scrimmage was a good experience for the younger players since they took most of the reps, especially on the defensive side where the first team only took a handful of reps. The offense could not afford the same approach since the offensive line needed to practice their blocking schemes. However, running backs Emir Davis and Marcus Slayton did not make an appearance for the second consecutive scrimmage.
After the scrimmage Coach Benson pointed out the major concerns we need in order to win, most notably fumbling the ball. The high number of offensive turnovers last season prevented a number of winning opportunities. Another major factor that affects us was penalties. Holding and offside penalties continue to put a halt in our drives. If we, as an offensive unit, can limit our mistakes and turnovers, we can win more games, especially with our strong and experienced defense.
